    When learning the Heavensward content...

...which role is better to learn it as? Then, after learning as that role, does it make the learning experience on another role easier?

I've no Heavensward access yet, but I'm in preparations for it. I play NIN, but lately been learning previous content as PLD. In truth, I'm lacking a bit of confidence with, what I hear, the DPS checks.

I guess I'm just trying to get an idea on if I want to push PLD or continue going as I am.

Learn it with your main. Learning how to play content as one role/class isn't gonna help you learn how to play it as another.

What if I have no main, but just a preferred job to play?

...that's exactly what a main is.

I prefer to do everything new with my main (bard).
You should also go as your main, or, if you have a static you may want to go as whatever your role in your static is (for raids at least).

I always do new group content as the tank, so I feel like I have some control over the pace of the group.

The thing is… The only one who can answer that question, is yourself.

The reason why i say that is that you should play the Job/Role you feel most comfortable with. The more comfortable you are with playing your Job/Role, the easier it will be to improve yourself.

As you are learning a Job, you should not focus on the DPS output until you are comfortable with the skills and have a general impression on when you could/should use these skills. After you’ve figured that out for yourself, it’s time to optimize the way you play it.

The same goes with having confidence in your skills. The more you play with the class, the better you will understand it. Due to that, you will get more comfortable with playing the class, which eventually will boost your confidence in regards to you skills at playing that class.

Also, not every Job may suit your playstyle, so don’t be hesitant to try out other classes. For example, i started out tanking with a Warrior, but i was having a hard time with it. Eventually a friend of mine suggested to try out Paladin and while i was leveling that class, the flow of the class and the skill set it offers felt more naturally to me.

It was the same when i compared the Scholar and the White Mage. I was more comfortable with healing as a White Mage, then i was with a Scholar. But, i didn’t know that until i played with both classes.

The biggest tip i can give you, is to ignore threads where people are having discussion on the amount of DPS you should be doing while doing certain content. Because, that doesn’t really matter at this phase.

Allow yourself the time to learn a Job and get comfortable with it.

SCH/SMN is pretty great IMO. You could learn both healing or dps.

I would say summoner is very hard when you try new fights.
You almost need to know a fight entering as summoner, to know how to manage your aetherflow. (say, do I use another fester, or will there be adds so i need to save my bane)

But its also the most fun job to play, but ive caused some stupid wipes because i didn't know when to use what skill

Learn it on whatever role you are comfortable in. You don't want to be fighting against a class you don't know well and new content simultaneously. If you've got your NIN basics down, don't be afraid of DPS checks. The only way you will learn to clear them is to play as NIN and experiment with your abilities until you have enough output to overcome them. If you want to play PLD solely because you are worried about DPS checks, I'd say reconsider. The only way you will get better is to experience it. If you want to learn content on PLD because you enjoy it, then by all means go for it.

Learning battles on PLD will allow you to experience how the battles will play out, but you'll learn everything from a tank perspective. You'll be busy managing CD's and enmity, positioning mobs and responding to enemy AoE's and abilities. Nothing will prepare you better than actually getting in there as a NIN and applying your toolkit firsthand. The bottom line is, play what's fun for you. Chances are, while juggling new mechanics, new job abilities, and your rotation/CD's, you'll mess up, regardless of what role you choose. Don't burden yourself with too much responsibility, you'll get better and better as you continue to practice your job, and you can learn most dungeon encounters thoroughly after running through them a handful of times.
