Final Fantasy 14 is a game.
After seeing some of the new Disciple of the Hand / Land requirements, I feel the developers in charge of these systems have lost sight of this fact.
In conversations with other crafters and gatherers, the joy from both came from the skill required and the ability to profit from that skill.
The new systems have introduced a very undesirable factor into the mix:
Grinding for grinding sake.
Are we gathering to explore something new? To see some cool lore?
Are we crafting to make something cool? To create something better?
No, we are crafting and gathering in a locked down system for no other reason than to craft / gather better.
Closed loop if you would.
This might have been acceptable even with the soul of the crafter x3 except you forced in one thing:
Time.
I can't pick up and put down FFXIV as I want if I want to progress.
The requirement, is to eye bleed through extremely repetitious content.
Its not challenging, it's not difficult... it's on a timer and often up to random factors I as a player don't have control of.
So what is there to be proud of?
That I can spend 10+ hours a day to get that lucky strike? (pure skill I know)
Being honest, I gave up on BOT/MIN due to the constant teleporting.
How much time does SE expect the average player to play online?
What percentage on raiding?
Gathering?
Crafting?
Let's do some math!
As a Fisher, I do like the look of the new lv60 Fisher set, I wonder how much time I need to invest to get it?
item|tokens
Tacklekeep's rod|26
Cap|12
Vest|18
Gloves|10
Gaskins|7
Waders|7
80 Tokens(red)
Each Token(red) will cost 50 Red Scrip
A 813 collectable Thunderbolt Eel will give us 10 Red Scrips
1 token = 5 Eels, 80x5
Thats 400 Thunderbolt Eels
Now, in about 1 hour, in a good run, I can manage maybe 7 Illuminati Perch
I'm going to assume Eels/Capelins are as random if not more random to catch than
Illuminati Perch.
400/7 = 57 hours
My guess is average player plays about 4 hours a day?
14; Two weeks solid of doing nothing but catching Thunderbolt Eels.
Since collectable items are untradeable, we can't even try to reduce that with gil.
Time is valuable. Free time / leisure time even more so.
How long will this grinded gear last us?
Just long enough for you to introduce a new tier with +50 on each stat?
