What is required to start leveling past 50?

So I just came back to the game after a long break. I have a 50 paladin. I purchased the expansion and am in the process of starting the main story quests from 2.1 to unlock the expansion zones. So am I locked from gaining any xp until I've completed all the pre-Heavensward main questline? My xp bar is showing the red circle with the line through it, and I've done a few quests but gained no xp.

The old storyline quests were designed to not give any xp, so you cant use them to level up. You just have to keep going through the MSQ until you reach the new Heavensward content. There all the quests should give xp again.

The only requirement for changing the level cap from 50 to 60 is having Heavensward registered. Your XP bar shouldn't be locked (the red circle with the line through it) if your game purchase/registration went through successfully. To verify it, find an open world mob whose level is in the upper 40's and see if you get XP for killing it. If you don't, then the game isn't recognizing your HW purchase.

(As Lelila mentioned, there is some level 50 content that just doesn't give XP, but that's not quite the same thing as not being able to get it anywhere.)

Ok Ill try that. I've only killed quest mobs so far. I got all the goodies in the email for doing buying the CE for Heavensward, so I would assume my acct has it registered, I just showed my xp bar locked.

I've been getting xp for all MSQ FROM 2.1 onward, for quests, mobs, fates, everything. My dragoon class is nearly 52, and my bard nearly 51, and I've not stepped into HW content at all yet.

If you're not getting xp, you might need to check your registration code, or contact support!
