why do we even need this gear right now when I hve 721 crafts and 698 control without even melding my mainhand/offhand?

It all depends if you are unable to meld and make the gear or if you just do it the slow and easy way.

I don't consider the 66 week time frame for the non-crafted gear to be as big of an issue since I'd wager that they were intended for more casual crafters who are interested in only gearing a single class or two. They'd have the advantage of obtaining decent gear without having to buy the crafted gear from someone else or level a lot of other classes to craft their gear. If they stick to a single class, they should be ready for more difficult recipes in around 9 weeks, which is in time for the next major update.

Omni-crafting is a completely different story, however. The 66 week path is not relevant since it's too slow, so the only other option is the crafted gear, which will take a player 23 weeks unless they buy extra materials at a premium. Sounds like you'll either have to pay up, use a number of alts to get the materials, or give up on gearing all of your classes.

Except this slow and easy way was supposed to be for casuals to stay relevant in crafting, but as it stands now you will being just slow beyond help. Point me to one person here in forums who will say that he sees this 66 week goal and psych himself for it. I bet he will give up in 2 months before he even fuly gears one craft, its gonna get so boring very vast for casual. Casuals are frightened by big gated grinds, i say yoshi overestimates the patience of casaual crafters.
Bare in mind there is gonna be even harder recepees added so the more time moves onward the more outdated we become. In 66 weeks we will see new gear with new gating, so we start a new, and so the cycle perpetuates. Casuals are never relevant to attempt relevant crafting in reasonable time.

In 66 weeks we will have seen new crafting/gathering/combat recipes, to say nothing of the potential for a whole new expansion mucking up that schedule.

I figure that by the time 3.2 rolls out, the time gate on the RCS stuff will be nerfed considerably.

Nerf is not the point, nerf makes the point that gate at the start was ridiculous to begin with. Nerf as a name implies is a nerf to the introduced system.

IMHO, the nerf to the system needs to arrive with the patch this Thursday! It's not just broken, it's atomised in a Rose Tyler way!
