Cancelled account?

My friend is trying to come back to this game. However when he logs into the mog station it says "You square Enix account has already been cancelled please contact square enix support for details". Is it even possible to cancel your entire account? He just cancelled the sub. Also I'm not sure if this belongs here or in new player help. I apologize if this is the wrong area.

Yes you can cancel the entire account, there two buttons to choose from "cancel service account" and "cancel subscription"

Have you tried searching his character on lodestone and see if it still exists?
