Personally, I do think that for more goal oriented linkshells / "hardcore" linkshells it is quite useful for several reasons that already have been mentioned on this thread, some to point are:

- Helps knowing a bit the player
- Allows everyone in the linkshell to have a say on the process, not just the leader.
- Ensures the player gets familliarized with a few of the LS rules and if he is willing / able to follow them

If members of the linkshell have had some problem with the player wanting to join, it IS specially interesting to know that beforehand instead of letting the player join and then discover something bad happened between him and an older member. Sometimes, this can be worked out and sometimes it cannot, but more often than not that would simply generate needless drama.
