Applications are a way for shells to pre-emptively weed out people they don't think will fit into their community.

Rather than "invite everyone" mentality, SOME of us prefer to weed people out BEFORE they are an issue.

No but I am mad at you for that comment. I'm not mad about applications in general but rather puzzled at the fact this has become a trend. Also, I was never declined. I applied once, so let's leave it at that.

If it was an mmo in game resume that would count in real life, then there would be an interest in filling out Ls applications.
