And there you have it. For it to sound sufficiently epic in English, you need to find something stylised without breaking the lore. "Immortal Flames" seems to fit the bill quite nicely.

Kanji alone has different meanings than Kanji put together. 不滅隊 is actually Immortality Corps. The use of Kanji can get pretty complex.

According to the explanations below, it sounds to me like each different language of the game is essentially playing a different game, since the three groups seem to each have a different ethos in each different language because their names are also different in each different language, am I correct? So if you are fluent in both French and English, and you decide to change to French, suddenly The Order of the Twin Adder doesn't sound like the best company for you 'in that language', and maybe they would sound better in German or Japanese?

I suppose Culture-wise, some/many couldn't handle it being called 'The Black Vortex Group' for various reasons. I would rather it be called that tho.

You sure? Because I've only ever seen immortality as 不死. . .

Looked it up, and we're both kinda right. 不死 would be not physically dying. 不滅 is used for concepts (e.g. love). I'd probably actually translate 不死 as immortal and 不滅 as undying in order to keep the same connotations/usage in English as are present in the Asian languages. So, even with Immortal Flames, there's a lot of localization going on behind the scenes, that's for sure. Either way, I'd rather they consistently localize than have them consistently do direct translations.

Note: One of the examples I saw for 不滅 I'm pretty sure was talking about how energy cannot be created or destroyed. So, yeah, not sure immortality is the best translation for that. >_>

It's not necessarily that I don't like the name, I just think that, and try not to pelt me with [item=3011454]prickly pineapple[/item]s for saying this because I mean no antagonism, but "The Black Vortex Group" sounds more like the successors to Team Rocket than the navy of a sophisticated post-pirate thalassocracy.

    黒渦団 -The malesrom
黒 is black 渦 is vortex or malesrom, 団 is group.Kinda thought it was wierd lookin name.

    不滅隊 - Immortal Flames
Immortal Flames in Japanese is 不死隊 or 不滅隊.It comes from the Immortal (Persian Empire)

双蛇党 - The Order of the Twin Adder
双 means twin 蛇 is snake witich is Adder, 党 is group.

Kanji is complacated, it makes it wierd to just translate it in English to Japanese or Japanese to English. The Black Shroud is 黒衣森. I can tell its just translated:-/

Japanese Wiki article on the Persian Immortals says 不死隊, actually, though I do see 不滅隊 listed as another name. . .

And yeah, I know you can't really just directly translate, but all the examples I saw for 不滅 were less literal/physical than the ones for 不死.

不(不・ふ・fu) is non-, 滅(滅・めつ・metsu) is perish, together they are non-perish, or Immortal, and 隊(隊・たい) is party/group but is mostly used for corps. The Japanese name for 'The Immortal Flames' Has nothing to do with fire. It is but a cooler sounding name to some、In other cultures... 不滅炎 (炎・ほのう・honoo) is Immortal Flame.

双(双・そう・sou) is indeed pair, 蛇(蛇・じゃ・jya) is indeed snake, however 党(党・とう・tou) is party not group, but can be the same thing depending.

So the Japanese names translate to 'The Black Vortex Group', 'Immortality Corps', and 'Twin Snake Party'

If you try to talk about 'The Order of the Twin Adder' with a Japanese person and translate it like it is named in English, it comes out 双子のヨーロッパクサリヘビのオーダー. It is good for the laughs at least. The auto-translation dictionary is too.... random to rely on as well, no matter which language you're trying to translate to.

It all boils down to 'what sounds cooler or is acceptable to X culture'. And Kanji is indeed complicated. There are several different kanji for just 'Ka'... So I ask friends for confirmation.

Still not seeing anything for 不滅 that isn't better translated as undying or indomitable instead of immortal, especially since all of these examples are for things like "spirit," "love," "light," etc.

Also kinda curious why 隊 always gets translated as Corps despite being used in every unit size from Squad up to Battalion, but that's neither here nor there, I guess. >_>

'Maelstrom' is 大渦巻き, Big Vortex. or you could strike the き out and it turns into 'A maelstrom'. 'The Maelstrom' translates to 大混乱, which is Confusion, Disorder, Cataclysm, or Upheaval.

A person I am talking to much prefers 黒渦団 Over 大混乱、because 大混乱 is mostly related to confusion. I don't think I would want my group to be confused. Even prefers 大渦巻 over 大混乱.

I go with the first meaning I see or whatever my Japanese friends tell me the meaning is. Works out better that way. Corps is just another name for group too. Like the 'Marine Corps' could be 'Marine Group', yet they went with what sounds more menacing.
