I got incredibly lucky against her - she rouletted Reverse. So my 4 shitty 1-star cards and 1 3-star were suddenly incredibly powerful.
But yeah, I absolutely despise the Random rule, I despised it in FFVIII (though there I could just get rid of low level cards, since there was no limit on which ones I can use), and I despise it even more here.
I also really dislike the limit on card use. WHY should I not be able to use my 3, 4, 5 star cards?! I won them fair and square! Why do I need to farm 1-stars to utilize 5-stars?! AND WHY THE FUCK does this limit apply even to RANDOM matches?!
This is all fun when writen, but stupid on a real match. You take ONE card, and the opponent gets 2 back, sometimes even 3, because your max. side number is even less than their minimum. I have those cards already (93 atm), just missing Hilda. Talking from experience. I should have recorded all my grind on NPCs to show how stupid it was, even baiting easy sides to get theirs didn't work as you said, because in the end they would place another 4-5 star and take both of what you already had, with a side left uncovered that would still be higher than your maximum ones.
PS: RNG ≠ difficulty.

If the computer is taking two back, you're placing your cards poorly. Here's the best way to do it:This is all fun when writen, but stupid on a real match. 1. Start by placing a 1-star card in a corner. I usually place in the lower left. Only two edges are accesible.
2. Computer takes that card. Now, your taken one-star card only has a single edge accessible.
3. Take that card back with another 1-star card. That card is now protected - all four edges are inaccessible. Additionally, the card you just played only has 2 edges accessible.
4. Computer takes your new card. Your newly taken 1-star card has one edge accessible.
5. Take that card. That card is now protected, as well. You're keeping dead even with the computer, and all the A's in the world can't do anything to change it because no vulnerable edges are exposed.
You always want to play your weak cards so that if the computer takes one, you can take it back with another weak card in such a way that the first card becomes permanently yours. Keep an eye out for when the computer exposes vulnerability on its powerful cards, but even when it does it's not always worth taking if you take it with a card the computer will just take back.
Remember, you don't have to have a deck capable of beating the computer's cards. You only need to have a deck capable of beating YOUR OWN cards, as well as ONE of the computer's.
Your reading comprehension needs work. Please reread my post: NPCs WITHOUT random are easy, because you can build a counterdeck. NPCs WITH random are the only ones that are any challenge to play against.

That whole concept fails when you're sitting with a hand of 1-star cards (with maybe a 3 or 5 star tossed in there) so that you play the game taking back what you can and defending your cards properly, then your opponent's last card takes two of yours just based on the fact that he's playing a 4- or 5-star since he can hold more than one of them at a time anyway. In Random, you can play your game perfectly and still lose because you have a handful of shit versus his handful of gold. That's not difficult, nor is it fun. Not even remotely challenging because you know you can't win. It's just as it's been said before. You're actually punished by having more cards to pull from. And even the NPCs' AI is weak enough that you can pretty well predict exactly what card he's going to play when. So you know that as you're playing he's going to take your 1-star with what 3-star because, well... reasons, and even if you follow that up with your own combo chances are that he'll just finish you off to a draw because your random cards are like paper to his scissors.
I spent over an hour playing against Morning Dew. Lost more than I won and I even had a hand given to me where it was nothing but one star. The few times I did win, she never dropped her card.
I never had so much fun with random rule before and I absolutely love grinding for a card drop.

This really needs to be addressed.

Every single NPC whose decks do not follow the TT deck construction rules should be reported for exploiting.
