When did you start tanking?

Broke my tanking cherry in 1.0 as WAR then PLD, 3.0 still WAR main and loving it. It's funny because I was DPS only while playing FFXI.

kept paladin as my main through most of 2.0 era, and changed to drk for 3.0

Since 1.0 never tanked in FFXI but since gladiator was the only sword job I went that at the time all classes could use stuff from each other so there was no specific designed role. Only once jobs came out did things get more defined. PLD was a weak tank for hate generation so it was never let in in end game in 1.0. Once 2.0 came out I levels smn since all others wer at 50 already on the last story dungeon I started to use PLD again and been my main till 3.0. Then spent first 2 days of early access leveling DRK to 50 and this will be my main from here on out.

Started tanking back in EQ1 as a Shadowknight, then moved to EQ2 as a Berserker/Guardian (You could swap by doing a lengthy quest). I tried out WoW as a Warrior, but didn't like it, then played Rift as a Riftstalker (teleporting tank, what's not to love!?) then I started FFXIV as a PLD, got to 50, decided to level the other tank and have been a WAR ever since 2.0.

I started tanking in FFXIV, back in 2.0 after waiting 3 hours for the third time as a DPS for an dungeon instance to pop.

In XI, not much. I'd War or Paladin just to get the job and related skills to cap and farm. Tried a bit with Rune Fencer but the parry tank system when I last was on was still a bit "how was this stat going to work again," without a dedicated healer and backup tank. If anything when I started XIV I took everything I learned from XI and started with a tank, all my craft and gathering jobs and healing (I can still blow through MP though). So yeah FFXIV is the only time I was either tanking or tailgating a side job on dps.

I started literally last night. I wanted to give it a try and was super nervous going in but found I really enjoy it. Did the first three dungeons and no one died, I received no complaints, and came out with lots of commendations so I must be doing something right.

So when were you ready to tank? I have this anxiety about leading people almost blindly into stuff. Should I just say screw it and try my hand? Or should I level a dps first?

I started casually tanking in EQ in like 2003/2004, I don't really remember at this point. I started maining tanks in Lineage 2 back in like 2008? Have been a tank main since.

World of Warcraft vanilla, Prot Warrior tank after playing as a Fury DPS for a good long while. Once I did it, I was smitten forever more, and every other MMO I've played since my main is a tank of some sort. As I continued WoW over the years, I did play Hunter as my main due to an overabundance of tanks in the guild I ran, but still had my Alt I always loved going back to. Soon as the Death Knight was released, that became my new tanking love.

Some real fun and notable tank roles I've really enjoyed were both TERA's Lancer class, and (quite especially) the Warden class in Lord of the Rings Online with its crazy combo system. So much FUN!

I was a dragoon in the Alpha test, but then when the came came I ended up going Marauder/War and liking it. I miss the old Inner Best, but then again we couldn't tank any end content. Remember Palas doing Titan EX with ilv70 gear and Warrior needed at least ilv90 gear :/. But nos is like glory days for Wars Fell Cleave ;*)
