As a Ninja should I do AOE when it calls for it?

So I'm a level 55 ninja, I got kicked out of a group from the Avery for not using AOE's and wearing a Vit ring, but the thing is I was under the impression that the ninja AOE's are an absolute waste of time and that I can burn down single targets much faster, oh and to top it off the person actually told me at the beginning of the dungeon to change out my ring, I refused....cause I had nothing better and the ring had some high crit rating regardless he then proceeded to pull the first 2 groups of adds and then told me afterward that he was kicking me in 2 min cause I was wearing a vit ring and didn't AOE. I mean I could have been an ass and just purposely ran into the boss room repeatedly to start a fight, but I didn't. Anyway my question remains the same, as a ninja should I be focusing on AOE's during group encounters or just burning single targets? I don't want a repeat of interacting with people like this jerk.

Ninja can pull off some pretty good aoe damage. The only setback is that you run dry on TP very quickly. It very much depends on how many targets there are. If you fight 3 enemies I tend to just dot up each one and use katon when I can. If like 4, katon / death blossom. If more, doto/ katon / death blossom. Kassatsu also makes every doton hit a crit so you can pull off some good numbers with that.

That pretty much sums it up for me atleast. Armor crush makes this even more fluid as you just keep spamming katons.

Depends really. Is the pull big enough to AoE? Is the other DPS AoEing / has good AoE damage? At any rate, in packs of mobs, use your AoE fire mudra and the ground-based DoT. If you have a SMN or BLM with you, yes, you absolutely should AoE.

As for the ring, the crit on that doesn't matter compared to the DEX you lost. DEX is so much more valuable than crit. So swap out that VIT ring for any DEX ring you can find near your level ASAP. I don't want to really insult you here, but if you're wearing a VIT ring for the crit instead of a DEX ring, it really does sound like you don't know how to play your job.

So I should focus on Dex no matter what? and there was a Monk in the party during the run, it was a DF run. Do people really inspect other players at the beginning of a dungeon? Raid I can understand....but a Dungeon?

Some people are much more concerned with it than others. If you're clearing content and having fun, I say do what you like as long as you're not actively holding back your party, purposefully or otherwise. One ring in a DF dungeon when you're still leveling your NIN isn't that big of a deal.

Your DPS job's primary stat (ie, NIN, BRD, MCH: DEX. BLM, BRD: INT. MNK, DRG: STR, etc.) is the one you want to gear up for first. Wear jewelry that has that stat on it above all else. You can start considering secondary stats when you have gear options with very similar DEX ratings, but we're not quite at the point of having enough options for all of that yet. Just grab whatever has the most DEX on it.

Hrm ok so stack dex no matter what whenever possible. Alright I got it then, maybe it was just a matter of that particular person just being a dick o.o.

use Blood for Blood and Internal Release then Death Blossom can deal high critical damages. TP can be restored with Invigorate.

don't forget that you can use Katon twice with Kassatsu.

I think ninja can do fairly good AoE damages. speedrunning with 2 ninjas Goading each other is awesome.

not sure why you need VIT though.

Whoever told you that doesn't know what they are talking about to be blunt. Like Nova has said, a job's primary stat trumps all secondaries. Only thing that is prioritized over your primary is Weapon Damage on your weapon.

The person in the dungeon was right, but doesn't mean they weren't being a dick.

On my ninja, if it came to an AoE situation, I'd drop Doton, Kass, Katon, then Blossom until the next Ninjutsu was ready then eyeball. If they probably weren't going to live for another 30 seconds, I'd just Katon. If they were, drop a doton. In AV, Ninjas rock on the last boss because they can take the seeds that are sown solo without any trouble at all.

As for the ring, that dude was an asshole. Hands down. Kicking you for ONE piece of gear that's not to his liking means he is in the wrong. Yes, you should have dex on that slot but Ninjas aren't exactly crap DPS and you'd have been fine with it on. Period.
