Idiot Noob looking for help with understanding MMO and FFXIV

    Hi all,
I'm just back from a long hiatus (16 months) of playing ARR, and thought I'd read the forums to see what the best hints/tips are for resuming playing as my Paladin again.

All I can say is, i'm lost in a sea of MMO terms and ARR specific stuff.

Does anyone have any simple "do this to become a better player" tips, or even know of a good guide I can follow. Keep in mind this is my first ever MMO and, while I'm really enjoying it, I do really struggle with the lingo etc.

Also I'm playing on PS4 (don't judge me!!!), so if there are specific tips for that I'm up for listening.

Finally, if anyone is up for joining me on my Noob adventures through Eorzea, let me know

    T(h)anks in advance

The best advice I can give is to play through the main scenario quests (and job quests for paladin), and run dungeons. I started out as a Paladin myself, and I found the best practice to be dungeons.

You can also look up guides on YouTube for rotations and openers, that's also what I did when I started getting into the higher level content.

As far as understanding lingo, your best bet is communication. People are going to use acronyms or other shortened terms often, so it's best to just ask. On PS4, I would personally recommend looking into a keyboard.

Beyond that, it all just takes practice. Tanking is a lot of micro-managing, so I would recommend also using the number indicators (placed above mobs), and try to stay as up to date on gear as you can (otherwise keeping enmity can become a problem).

I would be willing to help you out in-game, if you're interested. Only thing is that I am on Gilgamesh, so if you are too, then I would be more than willing to help you learn

All joking aside, only a fool would judge you for playing on what you're most comfortable with.

Another important thing is, while you're equipping yourself you want to look for gear that suits your role. If you're choosing tank you want things that look big and heavy, and are restricted to only being equippable by tanks (marked PLD, GLA, MRD, WAR, and DRK in game) in their requirements. You appear to be wearing 'Disciple of War' gear, which is good for a Monk or a Ninja, but leaves you significantly more squishy than you should be to be the team's front line. I'd look at addressing this as soon as you can.

Tanking is all practice, getting a feel of how a fight will go, being aware of all of your surroundings, you'll get to that level of comfort just by playing through the game, just takes some practice, also just try to enjoy the game! You will get back into the flow of things much quicker that way.

Thanks for all the useful information everyone. It is greatly appreciated.

I'm actually on Cerberus servers, and I'm trying to get a few of my Destiny friends to jump ship onto ARR.

Also Wournsfeik_Untawhasyn I think my image is of my leather worker gear as I'm trying to level him up, and also aquatint myself with the basics again.

    Thanks again everyone

I'm just going to leave this here for anyone else who is starting out like me.
It was quite easy to follow.

MrHappy on YouTube also has a "let's play" that takes a lvl 1 Conjurer up to lvl 50 and clearing the first coil of Bahamut (a raid). While a decent amount is centered on healing, there is also a lot of useful information about getting your mount, materia and he goes through each of the dungeons.

It should be theoretically easy to pay attention to the tanks he plays with (sometimes commenting on their play) and watching what they do well and what they don't.

Tanking is quite easy early on and starts to ramp up from Brayflox Longstop (level 30 I think?) And will introduce you to more things. Stone Vigil for instance will teach you to pop defensive Cooldown skills even when doing trash mobs.

Probably should've looked into your Lodestone profile before I opened my mouth. But I've seen that mistake made before so I thought it would be useful regardless.

And this is said with the utmost sincerity, I apologize if I in any way insulted you with that.

That's a picture of me on my mount. Her name is Mittens the Destroyer

Also as a ps4 player, the WAR who helped write that guide (Rowan Elliot here, Praysolace on that forum) wrote an incredible guide for ps4 users. http://www.ffxivrealm.com/guides/con...-targeting.71/

Honestly I consider it the best guide currently on that site and that's considering I wrote 2 myself
