I'm not so sure about the other games, because I don't do console gaming, but...

FFXIV's adaptation of the Crystal Tools engine is a total disaster.

Console games that are fps really need to go away. Console is a home arcade system, perfect for fighting, adventure, racing, rpg, and people that are to poor to buy a real computer for gaming. FPS belongs on a computer, and for the most part, so do MMO's. Computers aren't as common in japan as they are here, but console's are, so I can understand their desire to release ffxiv and ffxi in japan, to increase the playerbase, and since it's an rpg style, they can get away with it. But how every modern fps is on console, and there's no real fighting games or racing games anymore like there used to be, both of my ps3's have become glorified media servers for when I have company over.

Eh, Forza and GT are still very much alive in my book, and there are plenty of decent fighters around still, so I'm not sure what you're ranting about.

Forza and GT are too realistic for their own good though. Gone are the days where we'd see F-Zero or Daytona USA. Only things to satiate the need to play silly racing games now is Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Mario Kart.

As for fighters, we do have Blazblue, Arcana Hearts 3 and King Of Fighters still going strong. Personally I still prefer sprite-based anime fighters than the 3D ones like mortal kombat or tekken, though I do indulge myself in the fast-paced button mashing of Dead Or Alive every now and again ^.^

Well don't get me wrong. I used to be in a drift team on Forza 3 and spent hooooouuuurs making rear-wheel drive tuning setups for whatever car took my fancy (Yes, I made a Rolls Royce turn a corner like a Subaru Impreza WRC ). Spent almost an entire day once recreating this as a vinyl too: Jo from Burst Angel

It came out pretty good, and I put it on the games marketplace with a limitation of 10 and it sold out pretty quick, so I felt quite proud of myself for that x3

The rest of the team all drifted 4wd cars though which I really didn't like, 'cos 4wd cars shouldn't drift as good as rwd but they were out-doing everyone. Forza 4 is supposed to have much more realistic drifting though and hopefully some proper tyre smoke effects so it should be an improvement.

As long as I can get a good ol' Mazda RX-7 though I'll be happy as pie ^.^

Was just saying you don't see so many silly and fun racing games nowadays like back in the times of sega mega drives (genesis) and super nintendos.

I remember Super Mario 64, which had no real physics at all and was far too colourfull to be healthy, but was influential enough to cause many games companies to begin developing more 3D adventure games.

I remember Devil May Cry, which was completely over-the-top, but was enjoyable and 'immersive' enough to spawn 3 sequals and have other companies make similar games like Dante's Inferno and Bayonetta.

Star Wars, Turok, Gundam, American McGee's Alice, Silent Hill, Heroes Of Might & Magic...

All things that don't have realistic physics and graphics. Graphics and physics have no effect on video game immersion, the only important thing is that the game has to be GOOD.
    those are all before xbox
xbox killed console gaming and made it for whiney kids and wannabe soldier teens.

And engaging is important too. Although i would call it addicting and not engaging lol

That story is a load of bull, the only games they really mention are FPS games that turned heads when the trailer came on, and it doesnt take much of an engine to make somone getting shot realistic, just motion capture somone falling to the floor and your done. If they wanna talk about realism in differant games and the comparison of how the engine can make the physics realistic they need to look at racing games like GT5, PGR, Forza and NFS because cars are paticularly hard for an engine to replicate the physics. Which is alot of what the article mentioned.

Also making games for PC means constant very small graphical changes when graphics cards get 8MB more memory, which makes it less noticable, you dont play one game, then a year later think Wow these graphics suck, however with consoles you get more of a perspective on how graphics have been updated over the years, you buy a new console and are blown away by the graphics, well I am atleast, to get this on a PC you have to play a 5yr old game again and see how bad it is.

They also mention that on PC you can use open engines, which to be fair goes against the PCs strengh that its dynamic, if everyone used the unreal engine they would go nowhere, which is where the propriotory engines are better, yes they arent proven but if they do perform well they can look 10 years ahead of games using an older engine.

This writer knows nothing about games development, he would prefer a 10 year old engine in a game just so its on PC and thinking that his GTX580 will be doing better than an older card. Believe it or not if an old engine is being used and adapted the graphics, and realism will never be up to par with a new engine.
