Flying - Am I doing it wrong?

You can optimize your time in the zone by bee lining to the currents and current quests, that will give you more fly time, but in short yeah you have it right. You're supposed to spend a while on foot for exploration and then spend the last remaining bit flying around laughing at the ants below.
