I'm not quite sure what you mean.
To unlock Titan Hard, you need to get far enough into the main story quest chain. Likewise, getting far enough in the main story quest chain will automatically unlock Titan Hard.
I'm not sure how they could make it any simpler to unlock.
That is not accurate. Titan, garuda and ifrit hard are not main story quests. Titan, garuda and ifrit are main story quests.I'm not quite sure what you mean.

How to unlock the hard modes?
Complete 2.0 questline. Enter waking sands. At the bar area, you can find Urianger, Y'shtola and a few other npcs. The titan hard quest in specific is given by Y'shtola and is callled, "In a Titan Spot". You will have to complete a few other quests first though, including Garuda hard and ifrit hard They are all at the same place though.
Edit: First quest is called, " A Recurring Problem" given by Minfilia, in her room. That leads you to Urianger outside. Just do the quests and come back to the same spot for more. That should have been easy to find, since you get the quest right after your final story quest for 2.0 and it starts with the same npc that ends your 2.0 quest.

No, it's a sidequest, though you do pick it up at the Waking Sands. I only went as far in the MSQ as finishing the 2.0 story (up through Ultimate Weapon) and then stopped to do some other things, including getting a couple of my relics. They require the Hard modes of Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan, so I went back and did the unlock chain for them (A Recurring Problem, Ifrit Bleeds We Can Kill It, In for Garuda Awakening, and In a Titan Spot), but no further Main Scenario quests were involved past Ultimate Weapon. I still haven't started the 2.1 MSQ.I'm not quite sure what you mean.

I've heard that if you don't unlock the hard modes then, there is a later point somewhere in the 2.x chain that requires them. I don't know whether or not that one says where to unlock them from, but the relic quest doesn't. I had to look it up on the net as well.

This is what I was referring to. Interestingly enough, though, I can't seem to find the quests in question in any list to determine if they do explain how to unlock the modes or not, but I'm probably just missing it.
If not, well, I guess I not understand what the OP was talking about. It's a bit odd that an MSQ would require something unlocked via a sidequest without at least pointing you in that direction.
