I know it might sound odd, but since the moment I got Spread as an AST, I couldn't use it. In battle or out of it, the skill's been unavailable to me. Anyone else get this problem? Or am I missing something?

Are you drawing a card before using spread? You may be in combat to use the ability.
Try poking the mob with combust before using spread, if you draw a card and tank pulls you won't be able to use spread due some reason i dunno.
For the purposes of using 'spread', 'in combat' means that you've got some enmity from at least one enemy. If one of your party members enters combat, you'll have the combat music, but you won't have enmity from any of the critters until you either hit one with an offensive spell (like combust) or cast a healing type spell on a party member who already has enmity.
The game has a feature called the enmity list. It has green, yellow, orange, and red markers for any enemies that you've gotten enmity from. If anything is in this list, you should be able to use spread. If the list is empty, you will not be able to.
いつか人は一人になって思い出の中に生きていくだけ。
Throw out an Aspected Benefic as soon as the tank gets aggro from a mob before you use Spread.
However, my Spread has recently stopped working even in combat....I have to mash the Spread hotkey for a few seconds before it actually starts holding my card.
