When poeple were able to overmeld the old stuff and destroy endgame far quicker than planned they decided not to have bis crafted gear anymore. Seems now it is just meant to be filler for stuff you havent had drop yet or glamour.
What exactly *is* this "overmeld" stuff.
New enough to the game and not a crafter to have no idea what you're talking about.
Attaching materia in excess of the available starting slots on gear. For example you might notice a piece of gear has 3 slots available for materia's but you can 'overmeld' aka plop couple more on at much higher risk of attachment failure. You cannot add infinite amounts of materia though, even overmelding has it's limitations.

You could take the crafted i110 pieces (correct me here please, it was mostly accessories right?) and add materia to them to make them better. Each piece of gear has a number of guaranteed materia slots, but you can "overmeld" and have up to 5 on each piece. Overmelded accessories ended up (when done right) ended up having higher stats than the normal endgame pieces.
Overmelding has an increasing chance of failing and losing the materia that you were trying to attach with each meld.
Overmeld basically forces materia into an item without it having a slot but at a severely reduced rate of success. I think the first overmeld is 45%, then 33, then like 20%? I rarely overmeld so I could be wrong on the percents.
A gear piece will have a certainnumber of materia slots showing, usually one or two, that have a 100% success rate. But you can meld up to five in all pieces, each beyond the original slot has less of a chance of melding, so it costs a lot to do, but you could have very powerful armor if you maxed out the materia (pentameld).
You can meld up to 5 materia into ANY piece of meld-able gear. Sure, there's a limit per item level of each slot, but imagine each dps/heals with the health of a tank. The end game literally used to be Mana Song + Mana Song = Infinite power.
Sounds like something they shouldn't allow to be possible then if it's got a chance of breaking the game's balance.
Then they could make crafted gear worth a damn again maybe?
The success rate varies depending on tier of materia trying to attach and how many already attached.
I don't have exact figures though for each variable taken into account.
