FFXI peaked at more than 650,000 players with over 2 million characters and has always been a stable 250,000-500,000 for over 5 years, iirc the current population is around 160,000+.
wait a second, there's still 160,000 active players on FFXI?
I may consider rejoining if that's the case... gives me something to do inbetween leve resets. though I'll be trying to solo the whole damned thing since no one is around the starter cities anymore.
There are SOOOO many other ways to make gil in this game. I'm in the process of doing that right now. Also, I use to be on Trabia and eventhough it says it's 2 Chocobos full of people; I highly doubt that. I'm on Figaro which is one of the the top populated servers and even it seems a bit slow at times. And yes, Ul'Dah is packed but who cares so were WG and Jeuno. Someone did bring up a great point an dthat was, with the advent of the GCs, things are changing all over the sever for Figaro. I see more people in Grid and many more in LL than I did 30+ days ago. Our LS went from 4 people at Labor Day Weekend to 39 as of this weekend. We did lose some but I think it was because they found the game over whelming and not "casual" enough for them. Happens. But our LS is teaming with people having a blast at ALL level and some brand new players just started.
Take a break if you need to or try doing something you have not.
People forget this point and I will make it until I am blue in the face. This game shouldn't even be operational right now. They have said repeatedly that they recognize the game is in poor shape and are working on it. That being said, if you don't like the game, stop playing. It is not finished. Come back later. No hurt feelings. It was a mistake and they will fix it, eventually. And if it never gets to the point where you like it, then move on like any other game. You should literally expect zero from this game. You are an alpha tester right now with a very very rough idea of what the game could include later. If you go into it like that, you (anyone) won't be upset when they play (they shouldn't be).
Ya this game has only been out for a year, did you guys really expect the basic mechanics to be in yet?
I don't think it should have been released until 1 year from now given the current pacing, and even then, probably wouldn't be welcomed like a game like Rift (for the record, I hate games like Rift).
That argument sort of goes both ways dude. The game is still in the process of getting basic mechanics down after a year of patching. We're talking pre-alpha design document type stuff here. Why should the OP care to bother with the game at all?
OP, populations are low, and the antiquated social "features" they've given us to work with defiantly do not help. Unfortunately, I really don't think we're ever going to see jam packed servers like we did in XI's glory days. Times have changed a lot, and most gamers will not tolerate a broken or incomplete game. XIV had a huge amount of hype behind it; former and current players of XI were going to come back; people playing WoW were excited; there was talk of XIV on every major news site. And then launch happened.
Maybe people are right and the PS3 launch (if it ever happens) will revitalize the game, but I share your doubts and concerns. If 1.9 doesn't impress you then I'd suggest that you take a break until SE announces the game is "ready" but I honestly don't expect that announcement for another year.
There's the door, have fun playing anything else.
I've been playing almost non-stop since way before launch. I've seen every change, every improvement, every hiccup, every issue and every resolution. It's come a long way, but the core of the game, what it is, and what it stands for, was never bad. It had some lag, sure. The UI could use some polish. Could use some more quests. Little things, here and there. But you know what? I'm still here. Because the game is still good and on it's way to great. I watched EQ's launch and take-off, EQ2's launch, sort of take off, and flop, Vanguard's launch and flop, FFXI's launch, struggle, take off, go into a lull, take off again, etc. Vanguard had more than FFXIV at launch, and it failed hard, because it's core was not up to snuff. FFXIV's core is of a higher quality, and SE is dedicated, and that's why it will succeed.

On the subject of making gil, it might just be your server. I dont craft, but I gather/sell stuff from things i've killed, and make a decent amount of gil everytime I leave my retainer in the ward for 2-3 days or so.
