The copying and checking need time. Sure, they can let the servers in Canada still run until the datas in the EU datacenter are ready to go online, but everything the players earned during the transfer phase will be gone.

Is this confirmed?
Last thread i read about this the people in it said it would probably be new worlds.
If this is confirmed thats great news, cause i wouldn't wanna sell my house and disband my FC just to play with better ping

It would be lame not to, considering that the Chaos datacenter was already tagged as EU, and a waste of resources and money, as I doubt that many people would be willing to lose their FCs and houses. Just imagine the uproar that it would cause, when it's "easy" to copy the data and save themselves that headache.
Moreover, when Yoshida talked about it some time ago in a french interview, he said something along the lines of being gathering information and looking at how other companies did it back in the day. Why would they do all that work if they're simply going to open new blank servers?

OMG after 2 Years we getting now our own Datacentre, cant believe it! My dreams become true! Away with WTFast and die additional 10€ Sub Fee.. Canada i wont miss you ^(°.°)^

Hopefully they won't be on potato servers like the ones the game is currently on in Canada.

Honestly as a NA player on an EU server, (I joined it on a recommendation), I was concerned about the prospect of an EU datacenter because I have satellite internet, (the only thing I can get where I live with a download speed faster than 5mbs, I currently average between 15-20mbs download speed with this internet though,) which due to the way such works I already have a natural .7 second lag/ping time. Because of this I have almost a full second less to dodge AoEs than other players, which results in me taking a lot of damage from attacks that already have short dodge windows. The prospect of adding more lag onto that had me concerned initially. But, apparently also because of how satellite internet works, I have the same ping no matter which server I connect to, as after doing some ping testing with the JP servers, I found it to be the same as when I ping the servers based in the US. Not really relevant to anyone who doesn't also use satellite internet, but it does bring up the concern about what will happen to all the current NA players on the EU servers who joined them because there wasn't any difference between the two sets?
They will either have to move servers or deal with it as all Europeans have done for the past 2 years. If they join a datacenter that is recommended for EU, thi is something they should have expected. On the other hand, on a datacenter recommended for EU, a EU player should not have to battle pings cause the servers are in the US. I won't be sad to ditch my WTFast sub after the move.
For US players that stay on the EU servers: try WTFast to lower your pings!
I'd prefer if they moved the NA center to California now that they don't need it on the east coast for the EU.
Make the Aussies a little happier.

...and that's all we really know so far.Q89. Please tell us the progress regarding the EU Data Center.
A89. We've finished purchasing all the equipment, and we're currently in the process of setting everything up. We need to perform various checks moving forward, but we're planning to open it sometime this year and hoping to do this around the timing of Patch 3.1.
