I like this idea - I also thought of maybe giving them a somewhat ninja style - where the weapon skills aren't 1->2->3 combos but instead varying the order of input gives different "Skillchain" effects kind of as an homage to their XI specialty. This DPS role will primarily focus on TP managment. They will mirror BLM in the way of having form changes. Astral fire is to attack stance as umbral ice is to def/parry stance. Providing a infinite amount of TP with good management on the players part. As for actual moves, I'll leave that open for discussion. one aspect is that SAM will not typically have cast times unless warranted. such as the final move in attack stance that will use up all TP should a have cast time to compensate for the large amount of damage (like flare).
Astrologian is basically time mage already though.
If they were going to add a mid expansion job I think it would be something like Thief as an offshoot of rogue - less complicated than an entirely new job.
If they did another set of 3 dps/tank/healer roles for the next expac - which I know they said they wouldn't I'd love to see something like Rdm tank with enspells/spikes abilities, Sam dps with skillchains off of weapon skill order, Dancer as a TP healer.
I'd love to see blue mage and beastmaster but I feel like they'd be harder to implement.
If they keep going with job homogenization I'm not really excited about new jobs though.
You're completely warping what they said. They said drk fit better with the heavensward setting. Nin and mnk are already orient-themed melee dps. We don't need a third crowding the retinue. Sam has always had extremely strong defensive abilities and worn heavy armor, and in bravely default it was completely focused on anticipating your enemies attack patterns and preparing devastating counterattacks if you were the target of said attacks. It would work perfectly as a tank. I'm not saying they couldn't bend it to fit the goon medium armor spot, but you're kidding yourself if you think the class has no tank like qualities in its history, let alone very strong ones.
I really want a fast wielding long sword dps style class in this game. I just cant believe we have to wait to till 4.0 just to see what the new class will be. DRK was cool at 1st but the game play is missing some excitement and the animations are way to slow. It looks as though you are struggling when slinging that sword around. DRK reminds me of new knight picking up a sword for the 1st time and has no clue how to wield it. DRK as no form at all and might as well put the sword down before losing its grip and hurls it at someone's head.

Were numbers invented or discovered? How many Moogles does it take to make Kuponut rum? Answer: zero... They will give you a quest to make it.
Samurai never were really fast hitting. Samurai are slow hits and high damage with debuffs. Think of Auron from FFX, he was a sam class and used bushido. Although they strike slowly they are also fairly mobile which is why I think if they do wind up with cast times they will be able to move while casting.
Auron was pretty old thou...
I like the idea I also wish they had access to some magic like Fire sword or such like Steiner
i think samurai should be a major debuffer like its attacks could lower def and str or disorient and make casting longer for enemies.it would have a good role in parties cause by constantly loweri ng enemy stats/traits it would give a big boost to the dps and survivabilty of the party.
