Are new jobs simply advanced classes or different system?

From what I understand, new jobs will be implemented. Black Mage, white Mage, warrior, dragon knight, monk, bard and paladin.
So does that mean that a paladin will simply be an advanced gladiator, that is, gladiator with a higher class, or are jobs entirely different? So does that mean that jobs can use whatever weapon they want, like ffxi, or will jobs have to use the corresponding weapon. I remember that in ffxi a warrior can even use a katana but it won't be effective.

I just hope someone here can be kind enough to clarify this and tell me if there are any differences between classes and jobs.

Think of classes as broad varieties of skills that stem from leveling using a certain weapon. If you just use the class you can use a lot of skills because you can cross class almost whatever you want.

Think of a job as a niche role to perform as while on a specific class. Also you will be limited on what skills you can cross class.

    Here I'll give 2 examples.
If you want to be a gladiator and deal damage, you will use the class and equip many attack buffs from other classes and high damage weaponskills. If you want to be defensive and offensive, you will also use the class and eva/def skills from other classes. But if you want to focus on only tanking, you can opt to turn the pld job on. This will give you special tanking skills that you learned from quests. You might not be able to use attack buffs from other classes though so your DD will go down while your tanking goes up.

If you want to play con or thm and have raises, cures, nukes, enfeebs, and -nas. you will stay in the class. But if you want to focus on healing, while completly ignoring nukes, you can turn on WHM job. This will let you heal and -na, and give you better abilities suited to healing, but will probably stop you from nuking. (vice versa with blm)

So if you are gla and you want to play the niche role of a pld instead of having the freedom of armory, you can turn on your pld job. This also means you're tied to you gla class level and weapon, while performing your role as main tank.

Jobs are not really anything like you think they are. They are more of a specialization. They don't even have a level.

    Basically, it goes like this:

You hit Gladiator 30. So you do the first Paladin quest. You beat the quest and unlock the ability to spec to paladin. So you are always a Gladiator, but you can push a button to become a Paladin. Your stats instantly become more specialized towards tanking, and you are allowed to equip "Paladin Gear", but you are still confined to sword/shield because you are still a Gladiator in essence. As a tradeoff, you lose access to pretty much all cross class abilities.

In addition to this, every 5 levels (35, 40, 45, 50) you can do another quest, that will reward you with Paladin specific abilities that can only be used as a Paladin (such as a Pali-specific healing, or a really powerful Voke, etc.)

In essence what this means is that jobs will be used to create defined player roles that will work well in parties, but when solo-ing it would be more beneficial to just play a class (for instance, a Dragoon will not have access to any heal spells and so would not be able to solo.)

    Hope this helps.

EDIT: Dang, got beaten to the punch.

    Thanks for the reply.

But glad already specialize in tanking and if you use ablilites from other classes while using glad, it won't be as effective. So I thought paladins are only a glad advanced job.

So based on what you told me, jobs can use any weapon they want which is great because I wanted to use a dragon knight with a sword since I am no big fan of lancers.

Actually gladiator is ok at DD or tanking right now. My LS uses MRD and PUG to tank in the R45 raid.

No, both of us said jobs are tied to a class. This means you can use the weapons that class does.

    gladiator - paladin
    pugilist - monk
    archer - bard
    lancer - dragon knight
    con/thm - whm/blm

    not sure on marauder

    Mard = warrior

So in theory, how is samurai going to work when we dont have a katana?

First level up katana class to 30 and then you do quests to unlock SAM job and while you are on a SAM job you can't use any other weapon other than a katana.

The jobs I listed are the only confirmed ones so far. Even marauder's jobs is unconfirmed to the best of my knowledge. The only thing we have to go off of is the AF from its picture on connecton/famistu

We probably wont have sam or katanas for a long time. SE's current goal is to release the jobs, then balance, then add arcanist and musketeer. That could be months before that even gets taken care of.

The best way to think of classes is to think of them as the "Adventurer" job from FFV; that is, that they can pretty much equip almost any ability from any class(with a slight penalty to effectiveness), while Jobs are akin to loadouts from FPS like Battlefield in that you can equip them on the fly and gain specialized traits., and as others mentioned, you'll be gaining abilities through questing and such.

Example: Gladiator can pretty much DD or tank, and if need be you can specialize it further with enfeebles, healing or damaging magic depending on the situation. Equip the Paladin "loadout" and you're essentially "mega-tank" and gain whatever stat bonuses/abilities it comes with, but with the loss of cross classing abilities(to what extent we don't know I don't think). Unequip Paladin and you're back to your jack of all trades ol' Gladiator self.

The weapon is not locked to the class. The Job is locked to the class - unless some of you think we can transform Crab Bows into harps.

Although not confirmed, I greatly suspect there will be job specific weapons and by equipping said weapons, similar to how classes work, one will change to that job - provided they have unlocked it.

The difference with jobs will be that they will only use skills from the class they are linked to and their own job specific skills, and will not have cross-class skills. Stat wise it is also expected they will be highly specialized to their purpose. Jobs also do not have their own level, but share experience and level value with the class they are linked to.

Also jobs will have gear specifically designed for them that cannot be worn by any other class or job.
