There's more to it than that. People seem to forget that in an online game, how you play affects others in the same environment. I would personally love to find a nice group to get coil done, but it inevitably boils down to a blame game on every wipe and the drama is ultimately why I gave up trying. Even my own FC group ended up engaging in pointless debates and arguments over who-did-whats, and I decided I valued their friendship over my coil progression, so I left the group.

That's a more extreme example, but the fact is that every team you join means you're having an impact on someone else. Often I find that the ones who are hardest and loudest to complain are the very ones who never stop to check the scenery. "But, there's nothing to do!" How would you know, you skipped half the game!

People will always enjoy different things, and that's fine. But people need to understand that their actions will impact other's viewpoint of the game. Myself and some of my friends have been completely put off using the party finder for the most part simply because of the language used. "Get it right, or kick", "Experienced players only", "No loot, no run" and so forth.

Not everyone has to play at a high-octane pace, some of us enjoy the ride.

Play with people you like and ignore the entitled whiners to the greatest extent possible. It's worked out pretty well for me in this game for over two years now and in several other MMOs way before that.

Internet anonymity shows what people are like inside - some become complete morons and others just stay more or less who they are in the real world because they don't have anything to prove to polygonal avatars and text on a screen.

It's more that people don't actually like playing games, they like spamming buttons to get rewards and lounging around a virtual house while caring more about story over actual gameplay.

OP, the minute you said the word "True Gamer" you do realize you're inciting one of the forbidden trenches of Gaming Philosophy, right? It is not encouraged to discuss of such topics, especially in a community where everyone expects everyone else to think the same way.

Towards your opinion though, the instant gratification phenomenon is always present in all of us in some way. Some just handle it a lot better than others.

all I have to say is...

you're seriously trying to use the "a real gamer" thing? Like, really, really really? Honestly? Are you sure you want to do that?

Like take a step back and realise how fundamentally ridiculous and meaningless those words are and that your entire argument is based upon some groundless, arbitrary, unfounded classification based on personal nostalgia.

The problem is that as time has gone on, people either expect everything to be handed to them, or they expect everything to want the same thing out of a game that they do. If someone doesn't play the exact way they want, or makes a single mistake, the people around them decide that they're to be ostracized. If a class doesn't play in their ideal manor or has a slightly different style than the other classes in that role, then it's underpowered. If it takes time to clear content then clearly they must just have a bad group, or that "one" player is holding everyone back, and it couldn't just be because the content wasn't designed to be speed runable. I love certain aspects of the community, and I thoroughly enjoy the few players I've met that aren't either Elitists or Drama Mongers, but the sad fact about FFXIV is that those two groups are far more common than the minority of us that don't just play a game just for those parts......

I may dread the grinds required to get and unlock some stuff, (such as the fact that I'll have to get about 14k scripts if I want to unlock all the Folklore fishing locations, which is not a simple task in the least), but I would dread it even more if I finished all the content a $60 expansion had to offer within just a few weeks. Not to mention that actually working at a goal means that you feel truly accomplished when you finally reach it. If it's handed to you as half the players seem to want, then there's no sense of you being rewarded for your efforts.....

In terms of the Elitists, over time, players have gone from "Oh, I have to better myself if I want to do this in spite of my limitations, and once I do then I can call myself a good player", to "What?!? I'm putting out a whole 10 DPS less than this other class? Man, this class I'm playing is slightly more limited, so it must suck!" and "Oh? You want to take your time and watch the cutscenes and read those notes the dev team worked so hard to create and place everywhere? Vote to kick! We don't need some n00b in our party!" Players have stopped caring about trying to have fun, and enjoy the world around them, and have started to go with the "I'm only having fun if I'm better than everyone else. Everyone who is better than me is playing an OP class, and everyone who is worse than me should go die in a hole because they're holding me back" philosophy. They only care about the perceived challenge and bragging that they're so much better than people who aren't even trying to compete with them. They don't care that the other people are trying to enjoy themselves because it's not the same way that they personally enjoy the game. The so called "elite" players of this community are so toxic and annoying to be around that I can understand why so few people talk in dungeons. The worst part is that so many of them aren't any good themselves, yet they always look for a scapegoat or rage quit if their party doesn't do as good as the best party they've been a part of. "Oh, we wiped a couple of times on Garuda EX with half the party having never run it before? Well, there's no way we can ever clear it, so screw it I'm out".....

The most egregious example I've ever had of this was a tank I got partied with the first time I ran Keeper of the Lake. I went in with a friend as our healer, and neither she nor I had run the dungeon before or knew anything about it. We said as much and asked for tips on each of the bosses. The tank then got angry with us for not having watched videos on the run before hand, and wouldn't tell us anything about the fights before charging in. We finally got to the final boss of the dungeon and wiped twice because we didn't know what to do, and he wouldn't tell us. Said tank then proceeded to yell at us for wiping before telling us we should just leave because he needed the tomestones more than we needed to clear the dungeon for story progress. We finally just kicked the tank, and the with the next one we got, we cleared the boss without even a single person dying, much less a wipe. And while this is the worst that comes to mind, it's just one of the many examples I have of the Elitist community complaining that players want to experience content for themselves the first time rather than spoiling it by watching walkthroughs, or of them refusing to give advice on a boss because it "takes too long". And most of the time, these same players end up proving to be the weakest link in the group, holding everyone else back because they refuse to believe that being nice and taking a few moments of explaining is better than rushing ahead and causing wipes.....

This isn't even beginning to include all the players who are in so much of a rush that they have to pull bosses or hunt targets as soon as they can so they can move on to something else, even if half the players aren't even close to being ready. I don't get why players have decided that they need to do everything as fast as possible, regardless of how the people around them feel about it. Anythign that slows down how they want to do something is just a hindrance and is to be hated, regardless of what everyone else wants.....

Alright. I think that about does it for my rant on the subject. Thank you for those of you who took the time to read it, whether you agree with me or disagree. After reading the OP's post, I just felt the need to vent a bit, due to the toxic nature so much of the community has. If you do like speedrunning and having the "perfect team" in all your runs, then that's more than fine, and I have no problem with it. I just wish so many people wouldn't try to force it onto all the others around them, and get so venomous to those who don't play like they do. If it's all just a big misunderstanding in some cases, then I can sympathize. I'm sure that a lot of my post here will be misconstrued as well. I'm not trying to be mean or angry to everyone who thinks that way. I'm just ranting about those who treat others like dirt because of it. Again, thank you for reading my rant, whether you agree with me or not....
