I don't really care about graphics. I play a game to be with friends, family, and have a good story which FFXIV gives me plenty therefore I am happy..
Water? Pffft. Let's talk grass.
Yoshi-P is doing his best and is patching Endwalker. Please wait warmly until it is ready.

Running at Max settings at WQHD (2560x1440) resolution, I have definitely noticed a difference in the visuals. Yes, there are some odd things that happen like the ground seeming to slightly ripple when moving quickly across it but overall I would say its a discernible improvement.
P.S. For greater visual improvements, make sure to go into your graphics card settings and increase the color bit depth. For me it greatly increased the richness and color palette of the game as well as improved the visual contrast and shadow detail. This is independent of the dx version you are running.

The biggest improvement to was the real time reflections on the water and on the floor. I've had to stop, mesmerized, and play in the water in Pharos Sirius. And all the shiny waxed marble floors and their live reflection of the lights above them in the Gold Saucer is amazing.
The other major improvement that I saw, funny enough, was vegetable patches. They were just kind of there before. That pumpkin patch in Camp Cloudtop, though, REALLY looks nice now. I think it's the improved shadows. The sold vegetable really looks amazing.
SE warned that DX11's initial implementation would only offer modest improvements in graphics, but they'd continue finding things to tweak as the game is developed.

At least you can run the game in DX11. My game crashes when I zone in the dx11 client.

@Bishop81
Yes, I'm sure there are. The default for most graphics cards is not set to that and from my experience there are a lot of people out there that are clueless or know very little about computer hardware components or their settings. The suggestion was not meant for those that know about these things, but for those that may not know about it. Such should have been obvious.

I always thought Archeage had perfect water for an MMO.
Anyway, all of the elitism is unwarranted. It isn't as if everyone here is PVPing to compete for openworld Raid bosses or anything like that. Heck, most of us don't even pvp.

To be fair, you have to play on a Monitor vs a Television Screen to really notice a difference.

Tessellation and Parallax Occlusion depend on the resolution of the texture being "bumpified".
The textures in FFXIV must fit in a PS3's 256 MB of VRAM.
This is the result.
Until the PS3 is finally kicked to the curb and the game can be developed for PCs and PS4 with large memory pools, this what we have to live with. The other improvements in DX11 such as lighting/shading and reflections are very nice though.
