This reminds me of Chrono Cross. I liked that after each boss you gained a level. Fighting in between would grant you some stats that would count in the end if you were trying to max stats. This system ends up being like the limit break system in FFXI (which were have with trial/dungeon lock clears).

I would be interested in such a system as well where levels were connected to content clears versus a filling of an artificial meter.
