Dragoon only real option for DPS with 2h?

    Morning everyone,

I'm still fairly new at the game since I've played on here for about a week now.

Polearms are cool don't get me wrong. But warrior and dark knights are both tanks with 2h weapons? So none of the two can really be a role in Dps end game?

I was thinking of making a caster dps but it felt weird casting on one. Has anyone here played as a caster on WoW and here?

Not sure if I just have bad ping/ms or something. But every cast start feels delayed and finishes off with a delay. I'm also able to get a cast off while moving at the last .5 seconds. Idk maybe it's just me but casting in the game feels very delayed and not fliud.

I'm loving melee though. Most fun I've had as a melee in any mmorpg.

Currently yes, the only 2-Hander melee DPS is DRG.

I mainly play melee DPS in MMOs, my main in WoW was an Enhancement Shaman, but one of my alts was a Mage. My Main in this game is DRG, but I've also leveled a bunch of other jobs, including BLM. Not quite sure what the delay is you're feeling. Which caster did you try? Perhaps it's just the animations? Honestly the combat anims in WoW don't have many frames, so they feel very quick.

Being able to move before the cast finishes is actually beneficial to learn as a caster, especially as a BLM. You'll usually see people refer to it as "Slip Casting" or "Slide Casting". It's useful for dodging and movement heavy mechanics.

It you are enjoying melee, I say stick with it, but if a caster is something that interests you it can definitely be a nice change of pace to switch between the two when you feel like it. SMN would probably "feel" faster than BLM because they deal mainly with DoTs instead of larger nukes. Just a thought.

Hmm I'll probably give it another try at it and play at it for a couple of levels. As a summoner/arcanist.

What about machinist. I tried a bard but I didn't enjoy it because of the support abilties. Is machinist more aggressive of a job in terms of all like dps abilities. Don't mind the damage because I'm sure they will be buffed sooner or later since I heard about people saying the dps is bad.

Also does machinist have all instant cast skills?

Machinist and Bard are extremely similar.

Bard and MCH are both burdened with WM/Gauss Barrel cast-times, they both are stuck on the fact that they offer "utility" (I find MCH's "utility" a joke to be honest it is so weak... 5% debuff for 10s on 90s cooldown sharing a timer with their other 5% debuff. Oh and it's magic/physical damage debuff restricted too). And their 5% damage increase is situational and shares a cooldown with their doubled MP/TP regain and can't have both up at the same time without some VERY tricky/fancy weaving (I tried) and that's stil only 5% and on a cooldown of 120 seconds.

They are both burdened by the same issues.

Only difference is BRD is a "priorty" dps system whereas Machinist is more RNG. They both play extremely similar outside of that.

If you want the truth I feel like
    -Their damage is the same
-BRD offers more utility, flat out more, while offering the same MP/TP regain that MCH does.
-BRD is much simpler to play, less attention needs to be paid to RNG procs, reload/quick reload, etc.
-I think BRD honestly does more damage because you weave off-GCD abilities through your GCDs much more quickly. Like the execute = 12s cooldown for BRD, 30 for MCH. Difference feels even larger in actual gameplay. The BRD gets more DoT's (2) whereas MCH manually must place turrets.

However I feel that MCH offers more AoE damage if you want the truth. I feel that MCH stands out there. But realize both are burdened by the same burdens aside from that. MCH and BRD are burended with WM/Gauss cast times.

    <- 60 MCH.

While i like DRG, I do agree with you OP that I wish there were more 2H DPS options. Unfortunately, were burning up the 2h styles pretty fast with all our tanks. I would love to see a 2h hammer class though..it is still my fav big weapon style!.

That being said, most content (sans progression) can be done with multiple tank classes now if you PF or personally organize the group (as roles don't matter as much). I've seen people take 2 WAR (or more) in groups and clear content just fine. the non tank WAR just runs in Deliverance stance, and their DPS is pretty decent.

Functionally speaking, every class in the game except Paladin is, at this point, a 2-handed class. The only question is visual appearance.

While I main Drg, I must caution you, Drg are the butt of this game you mess up once and people will be on your case regardless of how new you are. With that out of the way, Out side of tanks and pre-mature healer, Dragoons pull the most Aggro as a DPS right now. only those who do Aggro Manipulation Techniques may surpass you. So while vision you look like your doing a lot of DMG wait for the numbers. Read the Flow, and Trust your Rotation. and For gots sakes use BL proper

and By all means Make Use look good. Good Luck

Every single thing in this game has some natural delay to make the game feel more cinematic. Regardless of playing a caster, you'll have to get used to that as it pertains to how enemies act as well. It's not the worst thing ever, but I can tell you NOTHING is like in WoW where what you see is what you get. As melee, positional bonuses count from where you start performing the aiblity, and it doesn't matter where you move after you start.

Dragoons are the only 2H Damage Dealer, but it's possible that we'll get the Samurai Job next expansion (probably a couple years from now), and that'll probably be a damage dealer using a 2H katana. The thing is this isn't like WoW where 2H users hit slower and harder. Everyone's physical weapon damage is the same (except Bard & Machinist because they're ranged), and the weaponskill potencies (weapon damage %) determine DPS as well as a few invisible modifiers to make sure certain things don't get out of whack.

In other words, 2H or not doesn't mean anything gameplay-wise. Every Job is about its own very distinct theme and visuals, so just enjoy what you like most.

Unfortunately, the 2-handed jobs I liked the most in FFXI are tanks here (WAR, DRK). I would love to swing around a 2-handed axe as a DPS. :/

Eh, WAR was always a tank, despite protestations from ninjapally elitists. Whose provoke were they using? </smug>
