Like the Astral and Umbral Eras, SMN complaint threads are cyclical. You move from the "Pets should do more damage/They look like crap" to "I don't feel summonery enough/don't like dots lets revamp" and back again.
And during the process, stuff starts blowing up in a more hilarious fashion than a Michael Bay film.
People need to understand that FFXIV completely breaks the mold on the idea of Summons/Espers/Primals etc etc..
Primals are not a positive force. The very act of summoning them is an abomination that taints the very soul of the summoner AND the surrounding environment. On top of that they "temper" by their very nature as is confirmed by Ramuh, who finds the whole process distasteful.
People want Summoners to be like their XI counterparts, or Rydia/Yuna from previous titles, but it JUST. DOES. NOT. WORK inside the current lore.
Heck with the way the Echo works I find it highly improbable the Warrior of Light could even summon a Primal since it's fairly apparent we're anathema to them by our association with Hydaelyn.
This is literally god mode. LOLY'mhitra stated there is still a new form of summoning at the end of the lvl 60 job quest.
Summner should get the ability to summon Hydaelyn and the Twelve because they are the only deities that can be actually summoned. I'm guessing since we skipped trancing with ordianary Primals and went straight to the Elder Primal Bahamut that Summoners will skip over the other Elder Primals and go straight to summomning Hydaelyn and the Twelve.
The Summoner should transform into Hydaelyn by getting filled with her personality and being. With Hydaelyn summoned we can either summon one of the twelve of our choosing which just changes the animation or use Hydaelyns spells and attakcs.
Ah, what?
I'm not trying to start any argument or what not, I'm simply stating my feelings on pet classes in general. As of late, practically every game that is labeled as a "pet" class, the pets end up being super lackluster in terms of raw damage. They more so end up being just another "DoT" and the player ends up doing a bulk of the damage which befuddles me because a class that is a Pet class, the pets should be doing a lot of damage instead of just some mediocre dot damage. It's kind of logical no? that a pet class, the pets should do a lot no? Sorry, I just played a real pet class in Everquest with the Mage and their pets blow anything and everything away in terms of these iteration of pet classes in mmo's for the past 10 years or so.
Breakin' my barrs hans, breakin' my barrs
Mages only began truly being able to do that sort of thing when the AA system arrived however. Before then it was just sit/stay/guard and OH LOOK MASTER IS GETTING HIT! *ignore commands and run to npc and wail on it like a mindless potato*Ah, what?

Not to mention EQ is more core than compared to XIV which is fairly casual, raiding aside of course. That, and i only bolded the aforementioned because it's been beaten to a dead horse with fairly even more logical reasons for this day and age than back when seeing a earth elemental tank two orcs in crushbone was the most badass thing to see.
If we honestly wanted to go with comparisons on pet classes, SMN is more necro than mage. Yet both mage and necro are labeled a pet type class in some form. One just uses it more heavily. What it comes down to is a persons own opinion on just what a pet class should be. Which i'll let the search function do the talking for me in regards to that.

Heh.. I was gonna say! I seem to remember Mages being complete garbage during Vanilla/Kunark.. I stopped playing before Velious
So when I started, I picked ACN. I enjoy pet jobs, I enjoy hybrid jobs; so in 14, ACN appealed to me and a year later I main SMN because of it. Of the jobs available, I currently like SMN the most, and I think it is mechanically sound. But it's not a very good summoner. Our super move Dreadwyrm trance may be mechanically and visually appealing, but telling me I'm summoning Bahamut is like telling BLM they're summoning Ifrit and Shiva because they can cast Fire and Blizzard.
The moral is I can enjoy the job and still be dissatisfied with how SE implemented summoner. Reality isn't so stark as you would have it.
It actually bothers me that they don't do more pet jobs in FFXIV, running the gamut from minion pets to proxy pets or anything inbetween. MCH is... I don't know, it's not, I can't.If we honestly wanted to go with comparisons on pet classes, SMN is more necro than mage. Yet both mage and necro are labeled a pet type class in some form. My beef with SMN is it's more WoW Warlock than FF Summoner.
