Get immersed in the story and explore the game world. I recently played FFXI for a couple of months before HW launch and I have to say, it was extremely refreshing to play the entire story and all expansions to really get immersed in the story and explore the world. That's one reason why I'm not rushing my goals in HW, because I'm enjoying the journey every single step.
