There is open world content that's not possible to solo.
    It's called A and S rank Hunts.

The average player WON'T just sit there and wait for someone to randomly help him clear a random quest needed for story progression. They also won't go around asking for this help. They will just get completely fed with such gates, and will quit the game.

As for your WoW argument: This game in its core has little to do with WoW. It's highly story based, WoW has no main story. You HAVE TO do dungeons, in WoW you don't. Etc.
The only thing common with WoW is the vertical progression...

I love the game but honestly the weekly cap is boring.

SirDarts: You mean SMN isnt an exact copy of Warlock from WoW? This whole accepting a quest opening map and seeing where it is right away isnt something from WoW? The mechanics of the abilities are the simplicity of attributes what stats gear give etc?
The whole please slay 5 mobs of this please slay 3 mobs of that on a constant repeat?

I think for the most part you were paying them to try to keep this game up and running. 2.0 was taking the 1.0 that burned in the oven and try to make it taste good. Now they have that system and are running with it. 3.0 I feel is more along the lines of what they want. I think part of the problem is they're trying to push too much out, but they were in a rush to get everyone away from 1.0 so bad.

They are learning to create more challenging content with environment interaction. There's always going to be a dance to it but they're just trying to figure it out and create something new. I believe they were drowning and now they're starting to get back up. We're going to see weekly lockouts because that's what makes someone come back time. Imagine if we could do Dynamis in FFXI whenever we wanted, I have no idea how it is now.

Remember also that there's someone there who has money or a high title who could easily go "We need this done..now" this rushes things, or they stomp on an idea hard working development teams are trying to push through and need to do it again. There are so many levels, not just from the technical side but from the business side. They don't interact well with each other, it is mortal kombat. That's how I see it when we have weekly meetings with on site techs, development, networking and business management. I picture the original movie where Scorpion and Sub Zero walking through the door on the ship and hear "Test your might..." "This is not in the budget!" "FINISH HIM!!"

But you're right on some things, there can be things that should be taken more time on and maybe push back a patch a few months to bring things out that take a bit of TLC and can come out not just beautiful in the image of it but also in the content it gives. Maybe they're trying to please too many people?

Leigaon if the game itself wasnt so easy and you level so fast they wouldnt have to feel like they need to release content so fast ruining it for thoese who cant even catch up when stuff is already as easy as it is.

"I thought that if I played long enough, this would turn into a completely different game!"

Well that's your fault as it doesn't make any sense to most people. If you are tired of this game, find something else to do. Maybe you will enjoy it again after a break. Maybe you'll find a game that you actually like...

    . . .
On top of that the enjoyment of earning levels and gears has completed been deleted.
Things to do that weren't there in ARR:
    - 3 completely new jobs and their job quests
    - 5 new skills for 10 other jobs and new level 50+ job quests
    - a new raid
    - new dungeons
    - new trials
    - the main story
    - new side quests
    - some unsoloable fates and fate chains with special rewards

To answer the question, yes it seems like a case of high expectations. The above things could easily give you over 100 hours of gameplay even if you only do each of them once. You should ask yourself why you are not enjoying leveling or gearing up. Perhaps you are burnt out? Or maybe you are trying to force yourself into a progression playstyle because it's what most people are doing. If you don't enjoy earning levels and gear, you could focus on other more casual MMO activities for a chance, like developing weird strategies for fights with different class combinations, pushing your class to it's limit by soloing increasingly hard instances, finding hunts before anyone else, exploring vistas and taking screenshots, helping new people or your fc, role play, making and participating in community events, money making, professions or getting vanity items (glamour, pets, mounts, house). If none of these activities entertain you, I'm not sure what you are looking for.

Edit. Nevermind I know now what you are looking for. FFXI, which is still available to play... It's literally impossible to please a player that's craving for a different game. <_<

Out of the things I mentioned you haven't yet done:
    - unlocked 1 out 3 new jobs and gotten any of them above 31
    - gotten 8 out of 10 older jobs to 60
    - completed the available new raid
    - done Ravana ex
    - done some unsoloable fates and fate chains with special rewards

Complaining everything is easy, while having barely scratched end game or tried playing with changed rotations and new jobs...

Reinha when Zilart and cop came out:
    1. I didnt even have one 75 job was still working on that.
    2. Was fun doing dungeons because it was challenge and rewarding.
    3. Storyline was 10/10
    4. Questing in FFXI you where not someones fetchboy as it is in FFXIV.
    5. Where many jobs in FFXI you couldnt have had all of them maxed out was almost impossible and difficult.
    6. Its an MMORPG stuff shouldnt be soloed the point is finding people that are willing to help you. I understand nothing like FFXI where 6 players must do stuff but atleast 2 or 3 people OUTSIDE of duty finder!
    7. I laugh at your silly 5 new skills for each job when FFXI overwhelmed you with skills and jobs im used to a BLM having 40+ spells not 20.

Beleive me I can go on.
