It's both. The approach Tanka had and the absolute lack of control over his crew were his responsibility and even he acknowledges his failures in this regard. It bloated a development schedule way beyond what was projected or feasible, and built a fundamentally flawed infrastructure that had to be discarded for a new client.

Had it merely been a matter of the game being unfinished, we would have gotten a Client update, not a new client.

And there will always be conflict in that regard. To a certain degree, they're entitled to desire such a thing, and it's debatable whether or not sating that desire is healthy for the game overall. There's nothing inherently wrong with the struggle to achieve something great, and loot is a tactile substance that represents that achievement. It's human nature to want that 'thing' that both represents that achievement and rewards it.

We can consider it a character flaw of humanity if we wish - but philosophically I don't view it as a bad thing.

It's when it sours into elitism that becomes a problem, and that is also a construct of the human mind. How we can enable the healthy concept of the first without falling into the easy trap of the second is a pursuit humankind has been struggling to achieve in the entirety of our history. I don't think a video game is going to solve that dilemma. But we can try to compromise.

I feel as if the rotating system we currently have is effective - I do hold a reservation that endgame itself could be broader than simply difficult raids being the only difficult encounters giving out the best gear. I feel there can be alternative methods developed that would benefit those who wish to put in the effort in different means, if but still similar in principle.

Ah. Well to clarify my perspective, allow me to address the post you linked as well.

I have FFXIV as a hobby sometimes i can play 5h a day sometimes only 2h a day I would never complain over someone who plays more than me and acheives more than me. Instead I want to think hey i wan't to grind and acheive the same thing and not have the mindstate ha what a looser that plays this for 5h a day I'm gonna get the same stuff as him 1month later for half the effort. Where in your mind is this a fair a picture?
Let's talk realities for a moment. The cycle is not 1 month, but rather 3 to 6 months, depending on the specific example.

To that degree the answer to your question would be you have moved onto bigger and better things. More important gear is on the horizon or already in your possession at that point, and you're working to achieve more, with the head-start you've already acquired.

The two advantages to hardcore players at this point is the ability to be well prepared for for the next difficult encounter moving forward, and the ability to rest on their laurels quicker and have more time for other pursuits. This is a fairly nice system that we currently have when you look at it objectively. It has systems in place to appeal to both casual and Hardcore. The question is, where are you losing your drive? Is it because you feel a level of futility in the pursuit of something that becomes obsolete? Or in pursuit of something that becomes accessible once it becomes obsolete? These are two distinct perspectives here and I think it should be clarified.

Rather he was the person in position of ultimate responsibility. His failures do not negate his successes, and I will always respect the work he has done. But to say he in no way was responsible for what happened with 1.0 is blind faith speaking and nothing further.

You know guys, he isn't wrong. Sure, the end game grind is in every MMO but the game didn't change much. Hunts, FATES, tomes, raids....I mean. Look if you give one way for people to get gear you are asking for trouble. I don't want to be the one to say this but it should be said, end game gear that is the most powerful is Raids(most of the time). The gear to get into those raids shouldn't be only through one avenue. Take, and I hate to say this, WoW for example. In WoD, you could craft gear, get it through the shit crystals(this was the worst way), do heroics(630 which was 10 below the 640 from crafting unless you upgraded the crafted gear), or garrison. So, I mean it doesn't have to be 100000+ ways but it doesn't have to be a repetitive grind either. I think it is a little unfair to force use into only one way.

This isn't a WoW is amazing thing. This is just pointing out that you could give options. Options hurt no one, it helps everyone.

I dont mind the gear treadmill so much but it would be nice to be able to customize gear a bit. Could be stats, or passive buffs or even an active buff. I played WoW a long time ago and remember being able to put a parachute on your gear and a short speed boost which were both really fun. Anything like that would be interesting, anything that it is horizontal really.

That's the balance, you can make it slower and harder but then you start making it more difficult for people who don't have the time to play. Those who have too much time will always finish early, and they will find the easiest route to do it with as little effort as possible, to me that's where it makes it hard to develop content. You know someone is going to find some way to go through it quickly and that will be the norm.

I enjoy going into a dungeon, fighting just a few mobs looking at the background, animations, music..I really get into my character and the lore so I zone out bad. I'm right above the point where if I got anymore into it I would RP it.

There isn't much of a reason not to finish content before the next comes out. Except for the player base, that's why I can't do final coil with a mixture of time restrictions, no static and a lot of people don't want to waste time with someone like me who wants to learn.

I believe they are burning through these iLV too quickly, the story has progressed but a lot. It might just make the game burn out quicker in which case people will just move on much like 11. I am not a fan of the solid way gear is made. I could say how in FFXI I liked how gear did "Enhances:" and a strong piece of gear vs a weaker piece with a boost to a certain stat is just as usable.

You shouldn't be expected to level all jobs to 60, I'm not I'm doing 2 maybe 3 and that's it. I'll gather / craft. You play the harder content with the current gear restrictions because you want the challenge and enjoy it. Sooner or later it will become obsolete and others will be given a chance to catch up.

But your original question was help you understand why you should continue to play. Much like my friend who quit, you have no reason to play. This game doesn't feed the needs or wants that you are looking for in a MMO. It's hard to say goodbye to such a beautiful game, but you will learn to love again. My friend came back twice and it wasn't so much because of the game but because he saw others having so much fun with it..but when he got in he realized it wasn't fun, not for him at least. This still bothers him..maybe that is why you stick around to play but really you know you shouldn't be?

This game gives me what I need because I can come in, play for a few hours and log off..go outside and do something. If I was playing this game like I did FFXI? I would be bored a long time ago and quit. But this game fits my life style, so I keep it around and enjoy it. I suggest you hang up your sword and shield, and I hope you find a game that compliments your lifestyle and makes you happy. Goodbye Sultansworn, for the time you were here..you served your Sultana and Scions well.

I find it very interesting I see this thread after running into another forum's thread (mmorpg.com) that discussed how "MMOs could and should be made for everyone". Which garnered a very mixed batch of replies, the majority chiming in: "That's just impossible because you can't please everyone." A lot of the users even mentioned that we would have a healthier MMO space if more games would cater to niches, because games would suddenly have a tighter developer focus which could potentially lead to more innovation.

As for FF14, the game is definitely stuck in this "everyman's game" mentality. The idea of creating a game for everyone isn't a bad idea at all. And so far, FF14 has been doing a decent job trying to keep that balance in tact. Other than the franchise it's a part of, that aspect could be the very reason why it has the playerbase it does. However we end up with threads this and others complaining that one side is getting too much favoritism (in this case, the game isn't challenging enough/doesn't reward players who have the time to dedicate to getting to max level in 2 days).

Every MMO has the crowd that will, no matter the obstacles, zerg through the leveling process within the first week of release. That's just a fact now, and telling people who do this they shouldn't isn't going to change that. Doesn't help that Alexander has a set scheduled release and people wanting to play it wants to be correctly geared so they can charge right on in and get their hands dirty. Problem for that crowd right now is a wait...which given knowledge of the MMO playerscape, there shouldn't be that much of a wait. Yoshi-P himself even said in interviews that he encouraged hardcore players to play this way. But that doesn't do any good if they don't have a proper reward or some kind of content to play while they wait for this expansions raids.

So in short, while I agree with everyone else that OP seems pretty set that they just don't like this game, they're not entirely in the wrong either. There should have been an end-game "mini raid" or something for the hardcore players to do that could prelude the oncoming of Alexander. Could even be story events and whatnot. Stuff that drops comparable gear to law tomes if you don't want to grind for said tomes. However the developers didn't have that (mainly because I feel they bit off more than they could chew. It sounds like developing three new jobs at once on top of creating an entire new realm from scratch really took its toll on the team) so now hardcore players are sitting on their hands. Which isn't good for any MMO, regardless of how casual it is.

Honestly OP, from what I've read so far in this thread you should probably Unsub and watch for the upcoming patches. I get the feeling that if there's going to be any "drastic" changes made it will be through those now that the dev team has some room to breathe. Use what you then to make your choice.

DreadRabbit the problem lies with SE and Yoshi P himself to willing to add something thats meant for thoese who want to feel like they have acheived and earned something. Its not like i hate the game its just that nothing else has my interest at the moment and on top of that I'm a FFXI player I belong in FFXIV I paid for the double subscriptions like many others to keep this game alive during the failga hours. Certainly i deserve more than a silly 1 dollar discount per month like thats a wow factor. Give us what alot of the majority of the players on legacy servers actually want. Some content that will never get nerfed thats just hard end of story. No handouts no echo etc so i can feel can actually spend time learning this.
