Anyone else feels like Dark Knight is missing a certain... /oomph/?

A purely subjective conversation, and not at all a statement on Dark Knight being 'bad', however as I start to level my Dark Knight, I find myself mildly disinterested in the class. Not because of how the mechanics work so far (I mean, it's early level, I expect it to be a bit simplistic for my level), but moreso the weight of the attacks just feels to be a bit... lacking?

When I play my Paladin, the skills I have make me feel like an indomitable fortress of steel. I literally feel like one of the tanks from Log Horizon who can use Hall of Stone and literally become immortal. My attacks are fluid with one-handed strikes, and there's a certain speed to them that I enjoy.

When I play my Warrior, every hit I do feels like I am literally swinging a giant, hulking behemth of an axe, with an oh-so-gratifying 'clang' sound included within it. When I inner beast, I -feel- like a beast. And when I fell cleave, I feel like I am literally going postal on someone

But when I start to play Dark Knight, I am feeling a little dissapointed. When I see the character swings the sword, and the sound the sword makes, it feels like I'm LARP'ing with a styrofoam sword. The swinging of the sword doesn't feel as gratifying and the arcs feel a little redundant so far. The cosmetic of it is pretty... Neat I guess? in that it leaves a trail of your darkness-powers behind, but the sword itself feels like a novelty more than a part of the class so far.

Looking forward to seeing more skills but that was just kinda a question on my lips as I level the job :3

If you look at the historical technique on how greatswords and claymores were actually used in combat you would understand that the animations for Dark Knight are pretty accurate. Even if this is a fantasy game, using semi-realistic sprites in a MMO setting can only go so far in regards to combat style and effect animations for such weapon. Most of the people I hear having a issue with Dark Knight is the same people who mained a melee or dps class other than a tank and them coming into Dark Knight with the mentality and technique of such dps class focusing always on single targets with large pulls. Being a Ilvl 177 Dark Knight, I find the job amazing being able to manually apply my dots on all targets, laying down a great aoe and also blasting all enemies with Abyssal Drain so when the dps go to that mob they are 3/4 or even half of their life left making pulls and dungeons so much better and quicker. Whichever tanks class you chose to play....make a choice on what you enjoy about tanking, being as you said a living holy wall, a tank with amazing single target potential of a warrior as a off tank, or as a tank spec that has one of the most potent AOE potentials for a melee in game with great abilities that can be used under certain circumstances.

Its missing the darkside aura vibe, which the class had in the video, but not in the game. To me this means the aura was either removed for launch or its bugged right now.

The missing darkside black flames is an accepted bug,it has been reported and then moved to the accepted bugs forums. All we need to do is to not let them forget to fix it.After all,the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

what I refer to is the cosmetic of the class. When a Paladin buffs himself with a CD, each skill feels like it empowers him to be more defensive. When he blocks an attack with his shield, it feels like he literally did that with his shield. When you *****smack someone with that same shield, you feel like your eyes would roll were you on the recieving end.

But with Dark Knight, I dont' get that sensation over much. The great sword feels weak, and more akin to a one handed sword when you hear it. The visual design of the strikes isn't very appealing, to me, at least. I do like the flow of some of their attacks but again, it's like your character's using cloud's sword from a cosplay. Looks cool and all, but swinging it lacks the weight of a real sword (Though man I would never want to use Cloud's buster sword and couldn't imagine my shoulder's surviving its use. Heh.)

You're thinking of ilevel and skills too much as their practicality. I'm merely talking about their cosmetic.

Ohhh. This might be part of it. Darkness is a huge part of it, but even without the darkness, it feels a little bit... wanting for girth? If that makes sense. I mean, you're swinging a broadsword - not a pair of daggers. :3 Guess I'll look forward to seeing these 'darkside' flames in action.

I get what you mean. I talked about it with my friends ingame and they agree that the animation lacks a certain heaviness to it. But the heaviness of the greatsword you're carrying is seriously realistic though. It's a burden to see my char swinging that giant sword so slowly but I would say it's certainly realistic.

But I love being a DRK, even though I don't main it. I like to play as DRK in PUGs as it fits easily with a lot of team composition.

I think the class is leaning more towards the "Dark" instead of the "Knight" and that's why we see a lot of our skills has a lot of dark effects around them and SE wants to point that out instead of the swinging sensation as with PLD or the mighty clang of WAR.

DRK does have one move that have a certain oomph to it. It's reprisal, which doesn't happen often enough unfortunately. It has that subtle screen shake when you stab your target and kick your target off your sword. This effect should apply to drk's final combo hits imo. I don't particularly like how power slash plays out. It's a power slash but your last hit is a magical palm strike. Still, if that animation stays, I want to see that palm strike cause a subtle screen shake like reprisal does. Soul eater on the other hand has the problem where you actually slow down as you fall with your overhead slash. Again, it should drop fast and slam the ground with that subtle screen shake.

Heh! The screen shake, that's an interesting point!

Black Mage flare does a very similar effect. Whenever it casts, the entire screen suffers the effect from caster PoV for a brief second. It's a sight to behold, every time.

Oddly, I feel almost the polar opposite to you. While I don't feel strongly either way about PLD's skills, I've felt WAR animations and the striking sounds are a rather light and wet, particularly compared with the weight of some of the 1.0 versions. With DRK the animations and the sound of steel slicing air and flesh, makes me feel like a badarse.

I think it's the sound effects, the only really crushing sound coming out of them is said aforementioned palmblast. Granted, mine isn't that high but comparing rage of halone to soul eater, it really has always -felt- like rage of halone was wreaking things whereas dark knight feels kind of...quiet?
