Did a 3 sector long voyage with pretty much no distance left and got sector 11 discoveredMy current hypothesis is that in order to discover a new sector you need to have enough range left over to ''reach'' it from the sector you discover it from. This would explain why I failed to discover it so far since I had been using pretty much the max the Elite's range to visit 4x sectors.
Send it out for only sector's 7 and 8 now, will be back tomorrow.
Trip 5->6->3
Found 11 after transfer from 6 to 3 (bonus), didn't found 7 (no bonus)...
Need to lookup in the collected data so far if we have a discovery without any bonus yet... i don't want to throw the bonus thesis out of the window after that result but its linked to the forecastle/surveillance.

Our Airship returned from a 10>7>8>9 trip with a double S (SS) rating, made about 1,000,000 exp during this.
+200% EXP bonus on most stops. Also brought 7 Mogcrowns together with Raw Celestine and a shitload of different tier III materias.
Currently rank 36 with full Enterprise parts.
200% bonus says "... performance rated as outstanding"

It's possible that if you want to test this someone willing to hold off possibly discovering higher level sectors could in fact send their 2nd ship (rank 1) with bronco parts to try to find sectors. Here you could potentially see if rank is a factor though it may not be fully independent of the stats. Thanks for the report! It looks like you were Rank 21, so it might be that your rank stat finally pulled it's weight. Or it may just be RNG, given enough attempts even a lower probability will succeed.
Speculating more, it isn't at all unusual for SE to use base level as a factor in stats formulas. In crafting, the most important "stat" that people never talk about is your level relative to the recipe level. Even someone with high stats will have some difficulty attempting recipes 2-3 levels above their own. And even someone with low stats should have a much simpler time when doing recipes 2-3 levels below. With crafting the contribution of class level relative to recipe level is nonlinear as well, so that would also complicate a statistical analysis.
That sounds like a really lucky trip! Our Airship returned from a 10>7>8>9 trip with a double S (SS) rating, made about 1,000,000 exp during this.

It would be nice to do something like this, but unfortunately we can't send a rank 1 airship to some of these unlocking sectors because there is a minimum rank requirement. It's possible that if you want to test this someone willing to hold off possibly discovering higher level sectors could in fact send their 2nd ship (rank 1) with bronco parts to try to find sectors. That is an interesting angle, keep us updated! My current hypothesis is that in order to discover a new sector you need to have enough range left over to ''reach'' it from the sector you discover it from. Congrats! I think the solo visit made sense simply on the basis of time, as you mentioned. But it also fits with what Aeyis was thinking too. I posted a bug report about the flight logs, hopefully it catches some attentionVery unlucky, we've finally unlocked the sector 8, while our airship was rank 26 and equipped with invincible parts for many visits around the sector 7 (and 6 and 5).
Tired of waiting, we've sent our airship to the sector 7 alone, and that's when we've finally been blessed by the new discovery.
Also, the voyage log shows that we've unlocked the sector 10, while the chat log says "sector 8 has been discovered" (and it indeed has been as we've sent the airship there).
I have my own sector unlocking anecdote to add to the pile, another one which downplays the role of surveillance. My experimental airship the Champagne Supernova! has just found sector 5 on the third visit to sector 2. It is using all bronco parts and was only rank 5 when it left the workshop. I'll keep trying to get as far as I can without upgrading anything to see how important that really is!

Airship rank at 24 at the moment.
Just discovered Sector 08, no 2nd airship yet.
Dispatched it to a Sector 08 only trip, hopefully this will unlock the 2nd airship.
I'll post here if it does (or doesn't, god forbid that).
Is it confirmed that only Sector 08 unlocks the second airship, or can anything over Sector 08 (such as Sector 11...) unlock it?
Our Airship hit Rank 27 yesterday and we have had no luck with discovering Sector 08. We sent it out to Sector 05 and Sector 07 yesterday, and even with an S rating we had no luck finding the Sector 08. We sent it out on 05,06,07 today, but if it doesn't find it now we may end up with the ability to send it to Sector 11 before ever finding Sector 08.

Airships back from SC07+ SC08. Still no SC09 or SC10 discovered. Both sectors gave a message of ''Airship condition found insufficient for further exploration''. At this point I have no clue what limits it. Was rank 28 for this trip. 3/4 Enterprise with Invincible Aftcastle. Nearly 50 range unused, so it seems that theory of mine is off.
Turbulent in both sectors, but we dont have any idea yet on what causes that. (random or not?)

I'd be willing to bet it is just bad luck at this point. Ever had one of those days where you fail a dozen 45% chance melds in a row? This might be like that except the airship versionAirships back from SC07+ SC08. Still no SC09 or SC10 discovered. It'd be really nice to figure out it is something more than just luck. That being said, good luck!
Everyone so far has reported getting it at sector 08, but I'm not sure anyone has tried visiting 11 before visiting 8!Is it confirmed that only Sector 08 unlocks the second airship, or can anything over Sector 08 (such as Sector 11...) unlock it?

Someone had the interesting theory that it was unlocked from visiting all of the bronze colored sectors on the map, of which 8 is the highest one. I'm trying to test that by holding off on visiting sector 3 with my experimental airship. If its true, it will give us a good idea when we can expect to unlock the 3rd and 4th airships![]()

Are your parts properly repaired after a while? If they're in the red they probably don't contribute any stat.
Ours had 2 invincible, 1 bronco and 1 enterprise part when we discovered all of sector 8-9-10-11 - now I've geared it up with a second enterprise part and I'm making more.
