So, I don't have any data at all entered at the moment, but I've set up a spreadsheet for documenting voyages here. Please let me know if you think anything should be added to it.
Unfortunately, my FC doesn't seem to be terribly interested in sending the ship out. Well, the people who can, apart from me, don't <_< So, we don't get that many voyages in, but I'll try to send it out at least once every two days and record the results.
As a note, the info on Range in the OP is a bit misleading. What seems to determine the number of destinations you can get to is just your ship's rank. At rank 11, we gained the ability to go to three destinations instead of only two. However, each location is a set distance away from each other destination. If you don't have enough Range, you can't travel very far. So, if you have a very high Range stat, but are only rank 9, you will only be able to go to two destinations, but they can be really, really far apart. If you are high rank but have a low Range stat, you can go to numerous places, as long as they're all close together.

This spreadsheet looks amazing! I'll have to give it a trial run with some incoming data. So, I don't have any data at all entered at the moment, but I've set up a spreadsheet for documenting voyages here. Please let me know if you think anything should be added to it.
Point well taken, but I'm not sure I'm going to modify it. The OP doesn't say Range is the only limitation, it merely says this: "Allows you to visit more sectors per voyage." That statement is true. Rank will limit the number of sectors you visit very early in your progress. After that, the limiting factor will probably be range. I might re-evaluate whether it would be good to add something about rank's limitation, although I think the UI does a pretty good job of making that aspect clear. I wasn't really in it to make a comprehensive guide, which is why I also didn't put anything about how to craft an airship, etc. The aim of the guide is to cover the less obvious things. As a note, the info on Range in the OP is a bit misleading. Edit: One thing I was thinking about adding was a section that outlined the various milestones in progress. Ability to visit additional sectors because of rank would be a good thing to put in there!

Thanks for the spreadsheet, already started to use it. Something that might be helpful would be dropdowns of the ship components used. Also, is the rank in column D before or after the voyage? So, I don't have any data at all entered at the moment, but I've set up a spreadsheet for documenting voyages here. I could do that, but I figured just having the stat numbers would be more flexible since I can only see the first two tiers of parts. Eventually, knowing me and my obsession with spreadsheet feature bloat, I'll have a separate tab where you can choose between ship parts and see how it changes your ship stats, with the point allocations and all so you can decide how to optimize for whatever you are trying to optimize for. If I put that together, you could just select your ship parts, then copy/paste the stats to the other sheet.
The rank before the voyage. I don't know if it matters at all, but it's a datapoint.
I'm realizing that the experience column is meaningless data, as the exp is a direct function of the sector visited and the performance bonus. If it wasn't clear. the two exp numbers at the top of the report, btw, are the total exp from the visited sectors before any performance bonuses, and the amount of experience gained solely from the bonuses.
By the way, is it possible for there NOT to be a second item? Or is there always a second item, and sometimes you succeed at getting it, and sometimes you don't? I've never seen it not say "Additional anomalies detected."

Ok, I put the level after it returned since that's when I'd enter the data (I guess somewhere there's a linear progression of xp to level?) and because I can't remember what rank it was before it came back :xThe rank before the voyage. I don't know if it matters at all, but it's a datapoint.

As for the xp, the bonus information might be nice to know if it's linked to the rating so maybe change it to just be the bonus?
Bloated excel sheets are the best sheets.
Edit: I misread your question, I'll have to check when our ship returns.

today's: #2 unlocked after S8, as well as S9 unlocking (R24) via S8.

Following up on my previous post, our next two voyages:
Visit sector 05 (only), Rank 19->20, unlock 07.
Visit sector 07 (only), Rank 20->21, unlock 08.
Enterprise Forecastle, Invincible Rigging, Bronco Hull and Aftcastle.
Previously made at least 2 voyages to 05 (not alone) without unlocking anything, plus one which unlocked 06. Those were all made with Enterprise Fore, but don't know which Aft (Bronco/Invincible).
The idea that the unlocks are tied to rank is, I'm pretty sure, incorrect. We unlocked sector 04 before we were high enough rank to go there, while sector 05 wasn't unlocked until after we exceeded the min rank by one or two. Meanwhile, a friend's FC unlocked sector 05 at a lower rank. I'm fairly certain you need to explore a certain sector or sectors (associated by proximity on the map) in order to unlock new sectors. If Exploration (or any other stat) is a factor, I'd guess that it contributes to an RNG roll, rather than straight-up determining the unlock.
Interesting that you took the trip to a single sector, and that also helps us rule out the theory that its a trip from one sector to another that is necessary for the unlock.
I think you are right. Many people, including us, found sector 11 long before we could go there. It seems most likely right now that the forecastle upgrade helps. It seems like the invincible forecastle is at least enough to unlock up to sector 11. I'm still really interested in reading other speculation and observations about this! The idea that the unlocks are tied to rank is, I'm pretty sure, incorrect. Might I ask, what ranks are you generally getting with your bronco aftcastle? Also, with your enterprise forecastle, how often do you see this message: Additional anomalies detected. However, airship condition found insufficient for further exploration.
Awesome, always great to find those new items! We've also found raw celestine, I did some looking and you can use it to make Celestine lvl 54 recipe, GSM, master recipe book. This is similar to garlond steel and farreach canvas, so maybe something that will be needed for future airship parts?
Did you happen to visit sector 2 in that trip? I noticed that sector 2 is closest to 5 on the map, so I supposed that it was the sector that unlocked 5. This was a pure guess. I noticed that when you get the unlock message in your flight log, it comes after the sector that unlocks it, just after the message that you've changed course to the next sector.
