Why are bards / Mechanists so... Sensitive? <_<

I decided, when I started this game, to main Bard. I didn't want to be pure DPS; I wanted to support.
Right now, I'm basically stuck on Bismark, because of the DPS check.
I hear from others about how easy it is, how they got through it on the second try. I have been at this for 3 days.
I'm level 57, iLevel 137 (highest available is 142), and I can't help but feel responsible.
It doesn't help that each party I've been in has had 2 bards (me and another one) or a Machinist.

The problem is that the support skills we have as Bards do not give sufficient compensation for the lost DPS. Unless we're in a party made up entirely of magic users, of course. If only there was a Physical Foes Requiem....

I've come to terms with the fact that my class is currently lacking. Here's hoping they adjust it well. Of course, it could be that I just suck. But if that's the case, I'm sorry to say I don't see how I can improve upon my current methodology.

EDIT: In short, OP, it's because Bard's are a DPS class, and can't DPS. Dragoons might be glass cannons, but at least they're cannons. It'd be like a Tank with 8,000 max HP. Might be because we aren't specialized, but that's what Mechanist is, and they're not fairing much better.
