The lighting in the character creator (and the entire game) changed with the Heavensward expansion. Prior to its release it was much easier to see our characters in the creator, particularly in the Black Shroud setting. Now there are stark shadows everywhere.
Regardless of whether or not this is ever addressed, there's a "Adjust Graphics Settings" button in the lower right corner of the screen that will pop open the System Configuration window. You can access this while creating your characters. The first tab is the "Display Settings", and if you scroll down to the bottom of those options you'll see a slider for "Character Lighting". If you move the lighting to a setting of "100" it'll look more or less like it did prior to the release of Heavensward. You can always change it back after you're done (the default setting is 0). Note that this slider has the least amount of impact in the default "aetherial background" environment.

I seem to recall being able to view the running animation at least in the 1.0 character creator. It's a shame this was taken out!
