    DX11 Tessellation - viewing angle

    Hi all,

Just wish to have everyone's feedback on DX11 tessellation and would like to know if it's 'by design'... as I notice how FFXIV is behaving :-
    - On low viewing angles, camera closer to the ground, the tessellation starts diminishing (bumps started to look flat), on higher angles, you will start seeing the ground starts protuding or sinking in creating the bump effect - parallax occlusion kicking in ?
    - Which led me to believe that parallax occlusion is only in effect on certain viewing angles.

Please have a look at the ground on these 2 pictures. Seems to happen when it's transitioning from flat to bumpy effect, and it's kinda disturbing at times...

I need to know if anyone noticed this ? or do I need to start worrying it's only happening to me ?

    Thank you!

The way tessellation works will always not be as good as real 3D geometry. You can control the degree of bumpiness but you reach a point of dramatically diminishing returns very quickly when you add too much bumpiness, it starts to look like a Martian landscape and very artificial.

The quality of tessellation in FFXIV is limited by the relatively low resolution of the textures, since tessellation is adding parallax based on the actual texture and the higher resolution the textures, the more parallax can be added and the better it looks.

Considering what is being tessellated in this game, that's pretty much as good as it can look.

Yeah, I understand there's a limit to it's quality but I just wanna make sure that everyone's getting the same thing, as those distortions are making me worry if it's my hardware issue.
More discussion on this thread on Reddit, but basically all I'm asking from the public, is an acknowledgement - "Yes, I'm seeing the same thing".

    - Though the opening topic may not be exactly what I've experienced, somewhere down the middle of the discussion someone did mention about the 'invisible / cloaked' thing on the grounds / terrain textures.

Particularly on the screenshot provided, you can see that there's a circular area slowly moving in and out when you tilt your camera angle slowly, sort of like a distortion typically used when trying to show an 'invisible / cloaked' entity moving about your screen...

So, again, anyone seeing this ? Thank you.

    I have the same issues.
After seeing some really horrible looking woodplanks I just turned Parallax Occlusion off. Sure, you lose some details, which look nice when you're zoomed out, but at least I don't have to look at these horrendous close-ups anymore.
However, I try to compensate it with Reshade + SweetFX and so far I'm really satisfied with my settings.

Why do people call Parallax Mapping Occlusion tessellation...? Anyways its quite a common error if its mapping was done wrong but seeing how bad some textures are when parallaxed is in the DX11 client I guess you can say that they rushed it. Also Tessellation only effects the water.
