The thing about SMN that has always really piqued me is the whole "rebel researcher" schtick, in contrast to serving Malvaan's Gate earlier in the Arcanist story or the remnants of the Nymian military in the Heavensward SCH quest. Before Heavensward came out, many people believed it to be the "canon" class to the Main Scenario simply because you're effectively the Scions' answer to the Garleans' Ultima Weapon, turning to lost Allagan arts as a way to fight the Primals.
If your character is given the opportunity to summon shadows of the Primals and learn from the experience, do they take it? That depends on who they are and what kind of experiences they've had. Even a Conjurer can feel alienated by her superiors and seek other disciplines for the sake of differentiation, another way of proving their worth. A bullied adventurer struggling to find their place in Eorzea could very well stop and consider the idea...
I mean, you saw what happened with Tristan. =)
