The family<>SP thing does work. A marmot is small and weak but fast, but with enough accuracy you can flatten one in seconds, so it doesn't give much SP. A humanoid enemy has a 'medium' amount of health and hits for a fair amount, it's as hard for you to beat as you are for it to beat, so it gives a fair amount of SP. A crab is a walking fortress, armoured to the core and hits like a truck, they're hard to beat if you're not covered head to foot in titanium, so the SP they reward is pretty good. Roselings are physically weak and quite slow moving, they don't have much in the way of health, but they have abilities that can switch you from ahead to dead in a matter of seconds, so the SP they give is quite good.

That's my take on it anyways.
Except that those're all things that seem like they could be covered under the "level" banner. For all that everything else in this game seems to be based off of the difference in levels, for some reason SP seems to be the outlier. Rank matters for SP, but for some reason family matters more. . .

Well I know what you mean.

Crafting is much the same. Without using facilities it's hard to make copper/bronze/iron/whatever nuggets but the SP they give for making them is terrible. However when you then go and make something out of those nuggets, which could be easier to make, you can get crazy amounts of SP.
(E.G/ Making Brass Nuggets at Rank 15 Goldsmith is uber hard without facilities but only gives like, 50 SP, but then the Brass ring you can make from them which is easier to make without facilities can give 500 SP, what's the deal with that?)

It is kind of daft that a rank 15 Roseling gives more SP than a rank 20 Marmot...
