Why are there no chat channels?

Just a simple observation I made. No noticeable general channels... Only thing folks seem to use is /shout.

How the hell did you folks meet people? Only reason I even have a FC right now is I have RL friends that play... But not seeing folks talking makes the world feel more dead. I don't imagine I'd be in one otherwise. O.o

I meet people through other people.. hunt/treasure parties. People coming up to me and talking.
Even in dungeons when I find out they are on my server.

Most people don't talk in my dungeon groups, much less ask about server. Meeting people through people is great but I:

    Don't do PF
Don't join hunt parties (seriously even asking, get 0 response)
Folks I know irl that play aren't on often and mostly keep to themselves.

In every other game I've played back to 2002, meeting people happened in zone general or level chat.

I kept to myself till lvl 50.
Then I was like: Hey I should find an FC.
I did get a few random invitations, but none caught my eye.
So I just went to the server forums, and there was a recruitment post that sounded really interesting.
Thus I applied, and they are really great people.

    So that's how.

I did well in PF groups, got invited to linkshells that way, and chemistry happened within the linkshells.

The problem is that there is too much single player content, like solo instances and you cant do most of the roulettes in a group.
And DF makes it easy to find a group
so people tend to keep to themselves because the game is more focused on lone wolves than friends.
which makes it hard to find friends.

Ive actually made most of my friends through my characters instagram page
and through PF. I tend to befriend goood players so I can do future content it relying on random blms eith their quick cast flare start rotations.

    I found out about hunts.
I shouted for a hunt LS (copying from other people).
Ended up being in one of the best.

From there, I met a lot of great people. And through the LS, have a great time.

I do occasionally find people using the /say channel, but most people prefer to keep to their private chats for two reasons....

    1) It keeps conversations private, so that random passerby won't know more about you than half the people on your friends list do.

    2) If everyone is using the /say chat, then it becomes very difficult to distinguish which conversation is which, and as such a lot of misunderstandings occur, and people miss parts of the conversation that was intended for them.

As for meeting people, you'd be surprised by how many people will start to socialize in dungeon runs or even in the open world if you ever say anything more than just "Hello everyone!". A good chunk of people on my friends list are FC mates and friends of friends, but I also have a good few on there that are just from talking to random strangers who happen to be fighting the same thing as me, or who I just happen to interact with in town for whatever reason......

That's the thing. Most of my friends come from the random banter in chat. There's lively commentary sometimes in shouts... In idyllshire. Mostly selling runs, but sometimes normal stuff.

Not everyone uses the forums. I actually avoid server forums because all that tends to be there is raid group advertisement.

People might as well be npcs. Hell my current FC chat is usually dead most of the day.

    Bleh.
