I recognise this was done for FFXI with the title Vana'diel collection.
Here is my logic and reasoning.
Critical response, especially on sites such as 'gamerankings' or 'metacritic' play a large role in game sales. Should the PS3 release successfully achieve a meta score of (for example) 80%, the PC version will still log at about 50%. Even a slew of newer, more positive PC reviews would be forever suffocated by the older, poorer reviews.
In this way it is not enough to simply release an updated box version, but to actually tag on a title to the game. This is done with 'game of the Year edition' releases. In this case, ... well i will leave that up to you.
What will happen though, is the original release, and the new title release will log separately on meta review searches. The potential buyer will simply see the PS3 and new PC ratings of whatever comparibly higher grade they receive. The older, lower grade rating may attract attention, but it is from a consumer standpoint, made less significant by an older date stamp and the power of TWO higher grade listings on the same game title.
Especially as the PS3 release will coincide with a time frame in which the majority of casual PC gamers will begin to have PCs in their homes that can actually play FFXIV. Do not forget that when this game was released, the system needed to play this game on high settings (which most people will prefer) would have been a NEW system. The majority of people will not buy a computer to play a game. Also in todays market, the majority have laptops, which could not even support playing the game on lower settings when it was released. Casual people own computers that are two or three years old.
The PC audience is largely untapped and will be a significant pool of interest in 2012 and 2013 as they find the system requirements begin to meet the specifications of their systems.
I feel this is a critical need and i hope it is strongly considered.
Thank you for your time.
