Seeking Lore: Au Ra and the Empire

Has there ever been clarification on just what the history is that the Au Ra have with Garlemald? Previously, all we knew is that Othard is under Imperial subjugation, but the backstory we've been given with the Auri naming conventions doesn't make any note of this.

It seems like this would especially be a massive, traumatic, end-of-an-era type turn of events for the highly independent Xaela clans, and so it's conspicuous that this gets no mention. Maybe less so for the Raen, with their very regimented society, but we know many live in Doma, and resisted as citizens of that nation.

Would the Garleans even attempt to assimilate them? Would they conscript Au Ra into their legions, the same way there's a signifact number of elezen and roegadyn (and a small handful of miqo'te and lalafell) among the soldiers we see? Would they perceive them as a beast tribe and simply try to exterminate them, or is that approach saved exclusively for groups that openly worship Primals?

Doma as a city-state was destroyed, so all of its surviving residents are now refugees wandering ___ places and flocking to Eorzea.

The only thing we know thus far is what Higiri said in the Rising Stone once Domans get accepted is that Yugiri's people have suffered greatly under Imperial rule. What I take of this is that they're specifically mistreated by the Garleans ...they're also mistread by Eorzeans if you do specific quests.

Sadly, you'll have to do some job quests if you wanna learn abit more about the Au Ra since some of them involve Au Ra

Dark Knight, maybe? I noticed that guy standing around in the pub in Foundation.

Personally, I'm far more curious about the situation with the Xaela, since we know quite a bit now about Doma (without having even visited yet!)

For the post 50 White Mage quests, you meet a female Xela Au Ra who's causing the Twelveswood to be in danger with her experiments because she wants revenge on the people who treated her and her people badly (ridiculed, physically attacked, etc). She doesn't say why they were attacked other than possibly because of what her people were. I wouldn't be surprised if her backstory also intertwines with the Au Ra history you learn in the Dark Knight quests.

More throwing Gridania under the bus for being a bunch of xenophobic jerks, hanging again with my good buddies Raya-O and the Moogle bros, and a possible side helping of Au Ra lore? I think I know what healer I'm bringing to 60 first.

Well for all we know, the Garleans only conquered Doma - the Japan analogue, not Othard itself. Othard is stated to be a massive region, and with the Primals to deal with and aether-rich Eorzea ripe for conquest, I doubt they're putting forth the effort to subjugate all of Othard.

Once you ping DRK 58 and do the quest, Sidurgu tells you that he came to Ishgard as a boy and his parents were executed in front of him and he was saved by his and Fray's master at the last moment (leading him down the path of the Dark Knight). Pending further information at 60 (which I'm still a level away from), nothing about how or why they came to Ishgard has been detailed.

Y'shtola's teacher in Dravania actually specifically stated that The City State of Sharlyon was abandoned shortly after Garlemauld had "Brought all of Othard to heel". So that to me seems to suggest that the entire continent was conquered and all who didn't bow were outright destroyed.

So yes I'd say all of Othard is under their control. We know they burned the entire nation of Doma to the ground for simply attempting to rebel. So it seem that Othard is under absolute control of the Garlean empire.

Really? I can't immediately think of any Othard references in-game currently, but the first few google searches seem to say that the entirety of Othard is under Garlean control.

Poor Sid! Seems being Au Ra is equivalent to suffering. <.< I've yet to meet one Au Ra NPC who hasn't had to deal with some terrible fate (though admittedly, a sample size of five isn't exactly convincing).

if i recall my friend who was doing the dark knight quest told me that meny Auri who fled to ishgard were killed on sight, due to there appearance, however the au ra dark knight and WOL may have a special reason for being kept alive (such as your allowance from house fortomp) but to mix that with the gridania white mage listed above, it seems the Au Ra were not welcomed into eorzea as people think, it seems they were slaughtered solely on looks.

They wet slaughtered on sight because they thought they were dragons its already mentioned in the Au Ra lore that they were mistaken as draconic but that it was eventuly disputed by scholars that their not. So that's why.
