Reticle doesn't show up until you move the mouse pointer even if it's over where you want it. There's a noticeable delay.

    Also, lock to cursor.

Wait, who used WASD to move in FFXI? Numpad for movement and arrow keys for camera ftw. Left hand is mainly for abilities and weaponskills.
Anyone that's ever played an FPS or another MMORPG, which all default to WASD.

Almost insignificant, especially because you're going to move the pointer around to place the AoE, anyway. Unless you want to place it on the place it shows up, but that's hardly the case... At least for me, as I usually play as healer, and player placement its not as predictable as monsters. My other arguments:

On mouse, you could easily use WASD to walk to the correct place, while moving the reticle there, use the right button to move camera around and the left button to use the ability. I think it's way easier this way.
That "delay" you pointed out seems barely noticeable on this situation.

Ummm. You use the right analog stick and it alone to place AoEs followed by a click to actually "place" it, so you can just as easily move to the location while placing it separately by using the left analog stick at the same time to move. If you can't manage using two thumbs at the same time, then I have no idea how you can use WASD to walk while aiming your mouse cursor. Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding what you're saying, but the way you're describing this is as though you suddenly can't walk and place AoEs at the same time with a controller, which is completely false......

Let me quote myself again, so you don't skip the important part:

You see? It wasn't an affirmative, let alone a statement saying that it's not possible doing that with a controller. I just think it's clunkier.
Edit: also (and I'm not really sure about this, I don't play with a controller anymore), I think the camera movement is different when the reticle shows up. I think the camera follow the reticle, or the other way around, I'm not sure. That doesn't seem as intuitive. I'm not trying to convince you to use keyboard + mouse, I just want to convince you of the necessity of adjustments to make the experience similar on all types of playing styles.

XI's standard keybinds were not WASD, but there were a few ways around it.

I prefer the XI layout anyway since it's mouseless.

I remember there being a great option in LoL when I used to play that. Instead of pressing your skill then selecting where to place the aoe, the aoe would be instantly dropped wherever your mouse is currently pointing at. It made things much faster, accurate and easier. That would be a great option to have here too

Star wars: The old Republic had something like this, basically with every targetable AoE if you double tap the hotkey it's on it would immediately place it at the feet of what you're targeting, rather than having you move your mouse and angle it properly.

It was really handy against bosses, and when the tank could gather all the mobs up in a single spot.

You can actually do that with the enter key in XIV, sort of. I pre-place my mouse where I want the AOE to drop, smack my Flame Arrow, then press 0 on numpad for it to fall in place. Takes about 0.5 seconds that way and I can set it up with the mouse while I'm firing my DoTs.

Imagine how much easier it would be if you didn't have to pre setup your AOE.
