Then I guess it's a matter of opinion. For me it's harder. Unless you know some other really smooth method to place them with a controller that I'm not aware of, for me it screams "made with mouse users in mind".
Player
Reticle doesn't show up until you move the mouse pointer even if it's over where you want it. There's a noticeable delay.
Also, lock to cursor.
Anyone that's ever played an FPS or another MMORPG, which all default to WASD.Wait, who used WASD to move in FFXI? Numpad for movement and arrow keys for camera ftw. Left hand is mainly for abilities and weaponskills.

Almost insignificant, especially because you're going to move the pointer around to place the AoE, anyway. Unless you want to place it on the place it shows up, but that's hardly the case... At least for me, as I usually play as healer, and player placement its not as predictable as monsters. My other arguments:
That "delay" you pointed out seems barely noticeable on this situation.Imagine this situation: as SCH during Giga Flare on turn 13 you have to use virus on boss, place sacred soil and walk to the correct place (at least during 2.x era). I can't imagine how clunky that must be for controller users... On mouse, you could easily use WASD to walk to the correct place, while moving the reticle there, use the right button to move camera around and the left button to use the ability. I think it's way easier this way.
