If you can't manage using two thumbs at the same time, then I have no idea how you can use WASD to walk while aiming your mouse cursor. Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding what you're saying, but the way you're describing this is as though you suddenly can't walk and place AoEs at the same time with a controller, which is completely false......
Let me quote myself again, so you don't skip the important part:

You see? It wasn't an affirmative, let alone a statement saying that it's not possible doing that with a controller. I just think it's clunkier.
Edit: also (and I'm not really sure about this, I don't play with a controller anymore), I think the camera movement is different when the reticle shows up. I think the camera follow the reticle, or the other way around, I'm not sure. That doesn't seem as intuitive. I'm not trying to convince you to use keyboard + mouse, I just want to convince you of the necessity of adjustments to make the experience similar on all types of playing styles.

Wait, who used WASD to move in FFXI? Numpad for movement and arrow keys for camera ftw. Left hand is mainly for abilities and weaponskills.

But yeah, I've wanted this as well and it's the main reason I'm not going to touch Machinist. Yoshida promised before ARR that it'll be possible to play the game with keyboard only. So far it haven't been possible to FULLY play without a mouse. One other thing I've always wanted back from 1.23 was that I could use arrow keys to move in menus as well as move camera. And to make it advanced, you could also move camera with shift + arrow keys while a menu was open (this was also in FFXI). Now I have to use WASD to move the cursor in menus.

Mouse-wrangling aside, I really don't think what he's asking for is unreasonable. A lot of the time, you want to drop a ground-target under a bunch of mobs. It'd be nice if you there was a way to say, "drop it under this mob, don't make me waste time positioning it, just drop it here". This is especially true for players who don't use mice, such as the majority of Playstation players.

It would also allow ground-target aoes the flexibility to be used in macros. For example, it'd be nice if:

    /action "Shadow Flare" <t>

would place your Shadow Flare on the ground centered on your current target, bypassing the need to position it with controller or mouse. We'd still want the option to position it normally - sometimes you want to place an aoe where there is currently no targets at all - but this additional functionality wouldn't be at all unwelcome.

I use the same setup as the OP. I have an injured wrist, and while I can type on a keyboard all day without thinking about it, using a mouse is really kind of painful, even with my fancy ergo mouse and a little bean bag wrist rest. I use the FFXI keybinds in which the right hand controls movement on the number pad (instead of WASD) and the camera, freeing up the left hand to control three rows of macros with the top row of numbers and CTRL and ALT.

The one place this falls apart is ground targeting, because that goes wherever the mouse cursor last was. I've gotten pretty good about sneaking in a mouse movement to the target and then hitting my Flame Arrow macro in the space of a global cooldown (usually in between my DoTs), but if I could have a macro line to move the cursor to my current target, it'd eliminate the need to touch the mouse at all during combat.

It's actually easier to drop targeted aoes with a controller.

And I know a lot of folks that play mmos with both hands on keyboard. Opens up sooo many more binds, especially with certain keyboards.

Then I guess it's a matter of opinion. For me it's harder. Unless you know some other really smooth method to place them with a controller that I'm not aware of, for me it screams "made with mouse users in mind".

Reticle doesn't show up until you move the mouse pointer even if it's over where you want it. There's a noticeable delay.

    Also, lock to cursor.

Anyone that's ever played an FPS or another MMORPG, which all default to WASD.
