Final Fantasy XIV ARR needs more than cross server grouping, unfortunately. Part of what makes not just Final Fantasy XIV, but any MMO enjoyable is the overcoming of social and multiplayer challenges. Overcoming the financial hurdles by successfully utilizing the Auction house, successfully buying a plot of land to build a home on, and engaging with the community at large are all examples of the engagement these kinds of games have. Right now engaging with the community at large isn't so much a problem as overcoming financial hurdles, as some servers are so bloated with wealth and people that pricing is sort of like Final Fantasy XI back in the olden days. Balmung, for example, is being victimized by rampant scalping on the housing market thanks to insufficient plots, and any new plots that come out will just be bought out immediately and sold for extreme profit. The cost is so high on these financial challenges that most players will never be able to triumph over them. The few that do have to step on way too many toes to do so.

The solution to this would likely be a combination approach of cross server and population redistribution so as to get more people on servers with surplus plots and spread the gil around to better even out the poor vs rich servers. Not necessarily something people are going to roll with happily, but it might be a faster solution than trying to find a more effective solution to getting more server space
