    Secondary Dye Colour

    Those that care about it most likely want it.

    Give us the ability to use 2 different dyes on one piece of gear. For example the new Law pieces for DD's contain both metal and cloth. Allow us to dye the metal one colour, and the cloth another (just one example).

    The metal areas on the Law pieces for DPS roles often look horrendous in most of the dyes we have available to us unless we stick to darker/deeper dyes. Dying it a single tone makes the armor look rather bland, especially when the metal areas are the exact same colour to the cloth pieces.

    There are also other pieces of gear that have a two-tone colour by default, and due to only having one dye accessible to us we are often stuck with a less desirable colour on our gear as the non-dyable section.

    This has been a common complaint at least among my friends when dying gear. I am sure we are not alone here.

    I understand the workload to implement this would be pretty intense if it were to be done for all existing gear, but at least give us this option for future gear.

    Care about it too much, would love to see it happening, but... SE seems to have incredible issues with character/inventory sizes and management. Adding more data to that (2ndary color on so many pieces of gear) is just not something I can see down the road any time soon. :|

    Is each piece of gear with every possible dye combination stored in the dats or something? It seems like a highly inefficient way to do this, although I know nothing about programming.

    Agreed. I got a real nice looking piece of armor while leveling to 60, and thought this could be good for glamor. Dyed it dalamud red and half the armor turned pink. That seems to be the best SE can do right now. They started it when they allowed us to dye darklight gear. Automatically dying secondary parts a different shade than the main color but it doesnt really work out very well. Especially when i want red and half of it turns pink.

    Not really, but if you look at the gear "data" as an excel sheet or something, we currently have one field for "dye", which would be blank (or NULL) if the gear isn't dyed or is undyeable. But to add secondary dye colour, you'd need another column/field for "dye2" -- whether the gear could be dyed or not. It might not seem like a lot of information added to the item, but if you consider the amount of items, it could add up.

    So I understand that this is something that would cost them resources. On the other hand... I think it's something that would be worth it. I don't know how many times my flatmate and FC mate has complained about how "all" caster gear has red details -- she always goes for a blue colour scheme due to favourite colour, and the red details simply means her choices are more limited. If dyeable gear could have two dyes, then maybe those red details could be dyed into some other colour, and her problem would be solved.
    Also, the Riviera dress for women... the only part that dyes on it is the skirt. If you'd like a green or blue or purple bodice? Sucks to be you =/

    It really does sound like this game's underlying architecture is really poorly designed if they can't "afford" to add more character creation options and dyes due to this nebulous concept of "too much character data."

    Then there was the ridiculous "we take a backup of every character and their entire inventory every 5-10 seconds" statement explaining why we can't have more bag space.

    IMO... The (upgraded) tomes gear has always been dyeable, but the "green" gear from dungeons has never been dyeable (in my experience) nor has the blue gear from Crystal Tower.

    It seems unreasonable to me to not be able to dye everything. Like I could understand it maybe requiring 3 dyes (eg cloth, metal and leather) to accomplish.

    Like if you were to bring up the dye screen it should let you "eyedrop" part of what you're wearing, and basically go:
    Cloth A - COLOR
    Cloth B - COLOR
    Leather A - COLOR

    Allowing you to dye whichever part you eye dropped assuming it can be broken down into that many elements.

    That was from Yoshi-P IIRC, and custom colors is simply 3 bytes (RGB), or mapped to a palette that the game client already has. either way, it's not identical to the inventory issue.

    The inventory issue has a lot to do with being able to move/consume objects, and gear durability/spiritbond in that "5-10 seconds", and if too much time passes, people will find ways of duplicating gear through server crashes. The worst thing that would happen in a "rollback" with dyes would be having to dye everything again.
