A challenge is nothing more then a test of your skills.

Generally if your skill is not up to par it takes time to achieve the desired skill set to complete said challenge. In dota, HoN, LoL, anything with a skill curve and the same challenge in store for the population, can you really argue that it is a time sink.

Drop rates are not challenges they are random number generators used to create rarity and exclusivity of an item, welcome to gaming economics. Last i checked FF14 had easy drop rates, and a poor economy are the two synonymous of each other.. no, however they do correlate.

arguing that a challenge does not equal time is a poor excuse for pro instant gratification

how else would you have expected them to take the game?

people complained about the complete nerf of the world nm's. what did you do? tell them to shut up and go play wow.

people complained about auto attack because people were too lazy to understand the old system. what did you do? told them to shut up and go play wow.

people mentioned that the changes to mp were too much. what did you do? told them to shut up and go play wow.

people talked about them removing the depth to the crafting system. what did you do? told them to shut up and go play wow.

people talked about it was not fun doing speed runs in the dungeons. what did you do? tell them to shut up and go play wow.

i pointed these out because they have been going on since day 1 with this group in charge now. people brought up issues they had with changes and instead of people on here actually discussing them it has been nothing besides a flame fest on the forums. i can honestly see why tanaka wasn't a supporter of forums for this game. they have done nothing good for the game and has caused more division among it's community.

if i blame anyone for the game as a whole going to easy mode i blame the people that have been constantly attacking each other in these forums since they started instead of actually giving feedback, whether it was good or bad.

I know that my gaming IQ is fairly low, for I recall adrenaline making my temples throb, while crossing Sauromugue, braving skinks and cocks... and goblins and the Yagudo, and dying at least thrice on the way there, to get to the spot where I could find the dragonflies that dropped the blasted grass. And then trying to figure out why the wretched bird would not take the third dose of his medicine. At the time I got the license, I had so little money that buying the grass at the AH seemed like financial suicide. But I was just a poor player... in love with the universe that had just opened in front of me, and I wanted to cross it on a feathered ride. A ride that seemed precious every time, since I often was close to not having the money to pay for it.

I categorize myself as a casual due to my limited time frame for playing games, but even I feel like the game is lacking in challenge. "Challenge" does not have to be quantified by time. You can play something challenging within a 30 minute time frame or a 4 hour time frame. In real life whenever I have a minute, I pull up Sadoku on my cell phone and challenge myself for those several minutes. It's up to the developers to relate that kind of thinking to an MMORPG and innovate.
    Beautifully put, Ashaylin.

Now that was a challenge with a REAL reward attached that not only got your blood pumping but created vivid memories, but I'm sure someone is going to call that a time sink...

So stop the "Hardcore vs casual" debate. Its not the issue.

The issue is that ALL of FFXIV is casual. There is NO hardcore content for us.
Fair enough. But it's hard to offer hardcore content when you don't even have the basics in place. I mean, you just have to look at the "gear is good for 3 months" thread to see even hardcore players don't want to waste their time on something that won't amount to anything.

That said, I think the materia system will be more to hardcore player liking, especially since the ultra rare combinations sound like a real pain in the butt (just the way you like it ).

I don't think how you obtain a chocobo to raise is necessarily the place to make the stand for more hardcore content, however. It wasn't that hard to get started in FFXI. You could buy an egg from a vendor cheap if nothing else. And in this game, since chocobos are such an important, iconic figure in Final Fantasy lore, it shouldn't be difficult for a casual player to get, either.

if you talk to most hardcore crafters in the game you will realize that the majority are not in favor of the crafting changes in general. the main people that are supporting this change is the people that do not like crafting now and will not like crafting after because the mini game itself is the main complaint i hear about and it is not being touched at all.

I've noticed that most people who complain about the game being "too easy" really mean the game doesn't have enough time sink. Most of the suggestions I read on these forums don't even make things challenging, they make them more annoying and time consuming. This sort of thinking should die with XI.

Many of the "hardcore" crafters I've spoken to admit the main reason they don't like the new changes, is because they won't be able to make as much money or have as big of a monopoly on the economy. They don't care if these changes may make the game better.

Out of curiosity what would you consider to be a time sink? I define time sink as something that holds no purpose to the progression of the game aka a waste of time.

When i look back at FF11 i see very few true time sinks. However what i do see is a time intensive game, that is if you are shooting to be among the best.
