for orge i use luminous spire right before a big battle reg so the mages can nuke him.

It's a decent WS, but nothing special. It's not really worth the MP cost and it's damage is not very notable at higher levels.
This is not entirely accurate.
Red Lotus II will strike legs and after so much damage is accumulated to that area, may (not will) bring Great Buffalo to his knees. Flashfreeze II does a much better job of this anyway, having a greater chance to auto-incapacitate a buffalo in this manner.
