I don't think of it being something that is just ignored about her but something she learns to adapt to. I do think Matoya will eventually sacrifice herself in some way for Y'shtola. Doing the broom quests for Matoya is an interesting glimpse into the woman. She is an old woman who is pretty much just waiting to die now. The while she holds a lot of love for knowledge and her belongings, the thing that gives her the most joy, the thing that is most precious to her, is Y'shtola.

We do see our former allies weakened but I think that is a step that will lead to their growth. Y'shtola has lost her sight but her mastery of Aether has increased considerably. Thancred can no longer cast magic but its something that creates drive for him to explore other options to adapt like Magiteck. Lets remember Thancred's loss is something Cid has managed with since he was born.

Its in the face of adversity that we can have greatest growth. Also as I said before it shows that our fight has a cost. Its not going to just be alright. We will lose things and have tough choices. Its what makes the hero.

    Platitudes. I'm not convinced.

There are ways to handle it that I would be okay with, conditionally, but the price tags thus far have been fairly arbitrary, and the people paying them either die smiling utterly assured of the merits of their sacrifice, or suffer in silence knowing their pain is meaningless before the suffering of the masses. It would be one thing if they had the character foundation to support that, but most characters seem to go from 0 to Jesus in 60 seconds, and with appallingly few exceptions, the people around them accept and laud their suffering without much of a second thought.

I don't like being the hero who serves an abstract, faceless good at the expense of the people around me (and not myself). It's not what I signed up for. Not in Final Fantasy.

If the WoL needs to face challenges and pain to grow, make them something thats either targeted at US, or at least have us, if nothing else, REACT to whats happening to the people we hold dear, none of which is going on.

I have to Vehemently disagree. Growth through loss is something that can be done very well, such as Toph in Last Airbender being blind, and becoming a master bender because of that, it was built in as part of her character design. Thats not what we have here, what we basically have is akin to someone losing both their legs, being put in a wheelchair, and them using fatal practices to make that chair move quickly, all the while NOBODY even mentions it. Sure such a person has a wheelchair to be able to move about, heck they might even be able to move faster than they could normally run, but they are still very much CRIPPLED.
