So what are they planning? You access the jobs after 30 with the current classes then eventually they get rid of all the current classes, fully replacing them with the 'jobs'?

no here is the plan.

Jobs
The job system - that series-defining trademark - will be implemented in FINAL FANTASY XIV (details such as specific jobs TBA). Quests to unlock each job will become available once you have reached a certain rank in the corresponding class.
Rather than being advanced versions of classes, we would like players to think of jobs as specialized playing styles optimized for partying. While playing as a particular job will render you unable to equip certain actions of other classes, you will be compensated with access to exclusive actions, which can be acquired through quests.
In practice, players will find the existing classes effective when playing solo or in certain party setups. Jobs, however, will shine in party situations where specific skill sets are demanded. Now, you didn’t hear this from me, but there are also rumors circulating that quests for obtaining job-exclusive equipment are also in the pipes.
We at the development team are currently hard at work on the job system, and expect to have details to share with you soon.
Well, this is the question on all our minds. The devs simply haven't given us enough information on the subject. But from what I understand jobs will be more group oriented and the armory classes will be more solo oriented. So if you like archer as a ranged DD right now, you might be out of luck until they add the Ranger job.
Seems so. Now I have to decide if I'm going to put up with this ridiculous BS. Forget what they are doing with this archer/bard crap, they are basically saying all the current classes and all the work everyone has done with them are going to become more or less useless. Using one of the current classes full time would be simply gimping yourself. I guess this replacement of current classes people worked on is payment in lieu of paying a subscription.Well, this is the question on all our minds. "You guys don't have to pay a sub because the game isn't done and the game is being overhauled to make all the work you did on current classes a huge waste of time. You're welcome."
At least now I know there's no point in leveling past 30. Get 30, do some stuff to earn access to a useful job, completely abandon level 30 class.

But what's to stop us from playing a class in a group? Why play a RNG or BRD in a group if I can instead be an ARC with MRD and GLA and LNC and CNJ and THM skills?Well, this is the question on all our minds. Because apparently there design goal is to change things in such a way where jobs will be infinitely more useful in a group than any combo of class skills. Even if someone does find a useful combo of class stuff they can just gimp the hell out of it until its worse than all the jobs. At least this is the intent I gather from all these dev posts.
Well if they want to increase bard damage over archer that would be nice. But it will probably be all DPS jobs do more damage than the classes, and bard will just do the same damage as archer (less than the other damage jobs though) while slinging buffs.
