It might be a harp, but if it is it's a pretty sad one

There's only so much fine detail they can add to a DAT texture and still have it look right. There's a lyre in the game right now that's very similar in terms of string thickness. Head to the Ascilica and check out the bard there on different image settings. You'll see why they made the strings the way they did; it's the only way it looks okay.
